Thread: Frank Sinatra

We were dining in Chasen's one night in 1977 with our parents when we noticed Frank, Barbara, and the whole family at a nearby table. We noticed when Frank walked across the room(to the comfort station?) that he was still scorching hot though past 60!

Theres a great anecdote i love about Sinatra and his mom Dolly.Dolly was mostly known for her big heart and her even bigger mouth.
In one trip to Atlantic Cily, Sinatra took his valet George Jacobs to Hoboken to meet his parents(Sinatra's) The first thing that Dolly said when she first saw Jacobs and just in front of him was: WTF, YOU NEVER TOLD ME HE WAS A NIGGER! WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE, ASHLEY WILKES??. LMAO. Then she gave Jacobs a big hug and welcomed him into her house.

When Frank first asked to bring Barbara Marx into Dolly's home Dolly screamed: "No whores in my house!"

    Poor George Jacobs.

Actually his book was really good. I seem to recall it contained a very cringeworthy anecdote about Judy Garland, anyone remember what that was?

PS, yeah "something stupid" had that inappropriate vibe, but that kind of added to it!

Yes, i remember reading that every time Judy got drunk she went to Sinatra's and even though she didnt turn him on anymore she wanted to have sex with him and she'd unzip his pants to create the "mood" she wanted. This sessions would continue until the early sixties.

i hear you! i guess that was only when she was NEAR to his place.
If she really went to him EVERYTIME she got drunk, Frank would have been the busiest man of all times!

Yes it would!! It was built for Frank and first wife Nancy in 1947. The furnishings are period although not original to house. It does have his original "state of the art" sound system but it's not connected up. One story mentioned was when Frank threw then-wife Ava Gardner's possessions onto the driveway after she appeared at the house in an attempt to catch him with Lana Turner. You can still see the chip in the sink where Frank threw a bottle in a rage. Wow, if those walls could talk!!! Oh, the swimming pool is piano-shaped!

So is this one the called "The compound?" The one JFK was supposed to stay at?

I am thinking not because I don't think it was built until the 1960's??

I was confused about this so I did some checking. You're right, he had the famous compound built in 1957 in Rancho Mirage which is just down the road from Palm Springs. This is where he had a separate house built for Dolly next to his and had a bungalow and heliport built for JFK , who decided to stay with Bing Crosby instead . This so pissed off Frank he tore down the newly built bungalow and heliport and severed relations with the Kennedy family. He also built several other bungalows on the property. Frank sold the house in 1995 to a businessman for $4.5 million who uses the compound for business purposes and is not open to the public. In 1971 the name of the street it's located on was changed to (what else?) Frank Sinatra Way.

Thanks for checking into that. I would have rather stayed at that house "the Compound." But that doesn't sound like it will happen.

Even if it was a rental couldn't afford it! LOL

And I do believe Dolly's old house is a rental? I read somewhere a few months back about that.

yep, they were dancing together in the Cand Store , the disco of the moment by then, in Beverly Hills. Mia was there with John Phillips (Mamas and the Papas)and George said that Mia was high. She asked him to dance with her.He accepted.. bad decission!. Mia and Frank were divorcing at that time but it seems that it bothered Frank all the way.

And to his dying day Frank never forgave poor George!

Frank didn't even have the ball's to tell him. He told George to call his lawyer!

Frank was one complex person thats for sure!!!

Im really fascinating by how obsessed Frank was for Ava Gardner.
i mean, he could have any woman he wanted, he slept with beauties like Lauren Bacall, Marilyn Monroe, Angie Dickinson,Lana Turner.... but it was only Ava for him...for the rest of his life.
ive found this information about how Frank felt when Ava left him for good:

"He was stricken, desperate, sleepless, inconsolable...In Van Heusen's apartment he would sit up all night drinking until he passed out from exhaustion. He couldnt rid himself of her for a minute. She went round and round in his head til he thoght it would explode. He would sit, staring at her photograph, then in an angry outburst tear it to shreds, then put the pieces together again...... One night he found himself alone in the apartment in NYC , Van Heusen was out,. Lonely, full of booze and pills , strolling about the halls in his pajamas he wandered into the kitchen and took a knife and he run the blade across each of his thin writst. Van Heusen came home and found him dazed and his arms and pj's all red.
Sinatra just said: Jimmy, i cant stop the bleeding"

Some women just get under your skin for no obvious reason to anyone else. It could be an attitude, perspective or whatever. It is very rarely looks I have found. And yes it screws a guy up.... a lot.

One day Frank Sinatra walked into his office at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas and started screaming and swearing, ripped the telephone out of the wall, broke some windows and set the office on fire.

The cause of his annoyance? The color of the telephone clashed with the new orange sweater which he was wearing.

You have GOT to be kidding!
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39

    Frank

I think Frank was a great singer... I love his CD's.....
I also enjoyed some of the movies he was in.

However, I think in his personal life.. he was a bully, conceited, and I wouldn't doubt his hands are dirty in a few deaths.

RIP Frank... you were still cool

    Yep that also!!

Also he was legendary for not wanting to rehearse in his movies or the television specials he did in the 50's!

He had a stand in to do the rehearsals for the other actors and would come in at the last minute and do the shot!

Which is a reason his two series in the 50's failed on TV!! But made Frank a TON of money!!

Great site. I wonder if Frank was buried in his toupee? I always wonder about people who wear toupees and what happens when they are buried. Do they live the lie in the afterlife as well?

I would not doubt it, he was buried with everything else!!

Following Frank Sinatra's death in 1999, his daughter (Nancy Sinatra) spent six days preparing his coffin for the funeral. Among the items packed in his casket? Tootsie Rolls, Wild Cherry Life Savers, chewing gum, and cotton balls soaked in cologne.

    The Nice side of Frank

Frank Sinatra, famed for his violent temper, once had a heli-pad installed on his Palm Springs property for a much-anticipated presidential visit. When JFK chose to stay with Bing Crosby instead, Sinatra, in a fury, attacked the helipad with a sledge hammer.

When Peter Lawford declined an invitation to visit, Sinatra shredded some of his clothes (which Lawford had left in the guest room closet) and threw them in his pool. On yet another occasion he threw a woman through a plate glass window, nearly severing her arm.

Sinatra also had a spat with casino manager Carl Cohen. When the crooner doused him with hot coffee, Cohen slugged him in the face, knocking out his two front teeth. This time Sinatra learned a lesson of sorts: "Never," he later told Kirk Douglas, "fight a Jew in the desert."

"Jackie Mason joked about Frank Sinatra, believing Frank had a 'sickness' about having to conquer women. He joked that Sinatra couldn't continue on that way - then added self-deprecatingly 'but how long can I go on this way?' Mason's gags were benign, mostly playing on his own jealousy of Sinatra's good fortune.

"One night Jackie was playing at a popular hotel that happened to have a special guest in residence: Sinatra. Sinatra came in to see the show and heckle. Since Sinatra had recently married Mia Farrow and was on his honeymoon, Jackie logically asked Frank, 'What's the matter, you're not busy upstairs?'

"On November 6, 1966, three bullets crashed into Jackie's hotel room hitting the bed where he had been sitting. On February 13, 1967 a thug warned Jackie to stop the Sinatra jokes. Then he beat him up, breaking his nose."

When Frank Sinatra married Mia Farrow in 1966, his version of "Strangers in the Night" was playing in the background. And Mia may have heard the song again later on; according to one-time girlfriend Ronnie Cowan, Sinatra enjoyed making love while listening to his own records!!

Great thread! I like reading all the stories about Sinatra,to be sure he was a "character".Love him or hate him he lived an intresting life, I liked the parts he played in his later movies, seems like he played himself (Tony Rome,The Detective,Assualt on a Queen ) He always made it look easy. I guess by then he had the "juice" to do anything he wanted.I look back and think about those years,"the 60,s",even though there was so much "crap" going on on in this country, they were good years for me and I miss them.great links on "The Compound"!
