I can't figure out whether Trog is better than Wicked Stepmother as far as screen legends' final roles. A drunken Joan engaging a man dressed as an ape, or Bette walking off the set of Wicked Stepmother and being replaced by Barbara Carerra who cast a spell on herself to change her appearance to Barbara Carerra.

Damn, she was gorgeous before the infamous eyebrows, wasn't she?

Who talked her into that, I wonder?

they all seemed to have those severe or drawn in eyebrows back then..must have been the look like the mullet in the 80's..lol seems like a good idea at the time

As a young woman, Joan was absolutely stunning. I can't think of any other star that changed her looks so dramatically, bar Madonna. She was at her peak, beauty-wise in the mid 1930's - such perfect bone structure. She photographed exquisitely from every angle.

I'm not a fan of the bushy eyebrowed, mannish look she sported in later life.

me either. Those eyebrows are scary and so harsh looking. Not a fan of that style

I just started reading Mommie Dearest today. She had some issues.

She had a perfect nose. And was lightly freckled. What a turn-on.

I just watched this movie twice over the last two days and I was trying to put logic to why she was like this. It's odd. In an odd sort of way, I can kinda understand. In all honesty, I don't think any of it was intentional. I think she had some mental issues. I think her actions toward Christina and Christopher were in her mind, done out of love. I think that she DID want children, but part of me also thinks that she did it out of the need for publicity. Her fans meant the world to her. I kinda feel sorry for Joan in a way because she didn't realize anything was wrong with her. She felt she was always right about everything, probably from many many years of being pampered as a celeberity. She was a powerful force in the business for many years. It's really sad thinking of everything Christina and Christopher went through, but to me it's also sad that Joan had a mental illness and her demons got the best of her. It's a no win situation.

I've just finished reading Joan's self help book "MY WAY OF LIFE" (again) it's totally hilarious (unintentionally!) & anyone who is a Joan fan, I urge you to buy it!

One line really haunts me though...it goes something like this: "My Christina is just starting out as an actress and a fine one at that. I'm sure you'll be hearing a lot more of her in the future..."

    How prophetic. Poor Joan.

Her face changed as she got older, particuilarly in the 1950s. She wasn't as soft, though I still think beautiful, just different. Some stories say she had a lot of 1950s plastic surgery that wasn't the best, or it was just age, though I have to say, she was no soft beauty in Mildred Pierce. She still looked soft in the Women, 6 years earlier.

She was tiny in person, though. They had one of her waitress outfits from Mildred Pierce on display at MGM Studios at Disney many years ago (the irony) and it was so small, it was like a little girl's dress.

Eh..the porn thing isn't true. As far as I know, it's a rumor that was never substantiated. I don't think a film every materialized actually. I think she did pose nude a few times, but that really wasn't a huge deal.

The guy who wrote Hollywood Martyr (David Bret) is a crap author. There's really no other way to put it. He wrote a book about Jean Harlow called Tarnished Angel that I'm sure most Harlow fans will tell you isn't worth the paper it's printed on. For awhile, he was getting into cyberfights with people leaving bad reviews for his books on Amazon. He also went to LiveJournal and started hounding people who were concerned that he was writing a book about Carole Lombard.

I've read a bit of what he's written and he claims everyone was bisexual and the biggest whore on the planet. I'm sure Joan and the rest of those people got around, but if they slept with as many people as he claimed, none of them would've had time to make any movies.

I just hated that book by David Bret. What a huge disappointment! you'd think it would be impossible to write a dull book about Joan, but he achieved it. Apart from ALL of Joan's husbands (bar Alfred) and amours being bisexual (apparently) there were absolutely no juicy revelations, just a tediously detailed plot explanation of each of her movies, which would have been fine in the hands of a much more accomplished writer.

I still say the best (in terms of most entertaining) book I read about Joan (and Bette) was Bette & Joan: The Divine Feud by Shaun Considine..okay, it might be wildly inaccurate and totally embellished, but so what? it's a RIOT!

PS: The pictures of Joan jitterbugging from They All Kissed The Bride - I believe this was the film that Joan stood in for her "darling Carole Lombard" who had died in a tragic plane crash whilst on a war bonds drive. Joan donated her entire salary to the Red Cross.

She really was pretty when younger. I saw a photo ages ago that showed all the freckles on her face. I think she was wearing a cloche style hat too in it. Very 1920s. It was lovely!

I love how so many of these authors manage to push their own thesis' and feelings in these books. I read old hollywood bios almost exclusively, and it's amazing the agendas in some of them. The last Kate Hepburn one I read had EVERY SINGLE PERSON IN HOLLYWOOD homosexual. It's downright ridickerous (too much tigger lately).

Best Joan bio I've read so far is Not the Girl Next Door. Seems fair and accurate.

Hey, if any of you have an ancestry.com account...you'll see it looks like Joan was born in 1905. She's listed in the 1910 census as being 5 years old. Granted, sometimes census takers can make mistakes...I've seen one relative listed in one census as being X years old, and in the next census the age is off by a few years.

BTW I think Christina was full of it. Probably what it was, Joan found out about her book and as a result, disinherited her.

It's said that the truth lies somewhere in the middle. All we hear is Christina's side. And Joan can't answer for herself.

BTW a couple nights ago I was watching "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane"? on YouTube.

I'm sorry...that last part about no one having time to make movies...you're right. If old Hollywood had been HALF the Wild Party some writers of bios and makers of docs seem to portray it as...well...

I hate that. I'm GAY and I hate that! They portray most everyone as gay, or at least bi. I'm sure old Hollywood had its share of bi and homosexuals (there are even the stories about Joan that circulate at times), and there are stories about a lot of people that can be or are confirmed, but surely there were a few people who happened to be straight.

One more thing...surely someone has posted this link before, but I found it kinda...funnycool...Joan's PSA for the American Cancer Society...get your Pap test, ladies!

That movie scared the beejeebees out of me when I was a kid. I checked it was made in 1962, I must have seen it on tv when I was about 7 or so. I was born in 1960.

Joan Crawford recipes...I know - but I like to look at celebrity recipes!

Recipes. Some of Joan's favorites (from MWOL):
Meat Loaf: I use two pounds of ground sirloin, a pound of ground veal, and a pound of sausage meat...thoroughly mixed with three eggs, a bottle of A-1, a good lacing of Worcestershire, a lot of seasoned salt, and finely chopped purple onion and green peppers. I hide four hard-boiled eggs inside the loaf and before it goes into the oven I dribble over more A-1 and Worcestershire and seasoned salt so that a crust will form.
Wilted Spinach Salad: I pour hot bacon grease and vinegar over the spinach leaves until they sag, and then sprinkle crisp bacon on top. You can do this with lettuce or dandelion greens, too.
Salad (best served with fried chicken or baked ham): ...made with kidney beans, purple onions, green peppers, celery, and hot red peppers--all chopped very fine and tossed with vinegar, Tabasco, kosher salt, and black pepper. It should be refrigerated overnight to marinade...
Coleslaw: I must brag...that I'm famous among a small group of regulars for my coleslaw. The basic ingredients are shaved cabbage, green peppers, finely chopped pimiento, and pineapple. Over this goes a dressing of mayonnaise, a liberal amount of both dry mustard and prepared mustard, the juice of six lemons, olive oil, cider vinegar, hot peppers, and a magic mixture of spices and herbs that I buy from a restaurant in Hollywood, the Cock 'n Bull.
In addition, the Frito-Lay company issued a cookbook (year unknown) called Betcha can't eat just one... that included a recipe for "Joan Crawford Dip":
2 (3 oz. each) pkgs. cream cheese
    2 tbsps. milk
    1/2 cup sour cream
1 twin-pack FRITOS Horseradish Dip Mix
1 twin-pack FRITOS Green Onion Dip Mix
2 tbsps. lemon juice (1/2 lemon)

Soften cream cheese with milk; add sour cream and mix well. Add remaining ingredients and let stand 30 minutes. Serve with FRITOS King-Size corn chips or LAY'S potato chips.
