    Reubens 'to resurrect Pee-wee Herman'

    Wednesday, August 12 2009, 17:58 BST
    By Tim Parks, Entertainment Reporter

Paul Reubens plans to resurrect his Pee-wee Herman character for a live stage show, it has been reported.
The 56-year-old actor will reportedly appear as his child-like alter ego for The Pee-wee Herman Show in Los Angeles in November.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the performance is a reimagining of his 1980s theatrical production that was also a special for HBO in '81 and led to his '85 feature film debut Pee-wee's Big Adventure. The franchise also includes children's programme Pee-wee's Playhouse, which aired on CBS from 1986 to 1990.
"I've put part of him away for a long time, but part of him has always been here with me," he said. "I think it will be like riding a bike - which is not a bad analogy for Pee-wee, by the way."
Reubens added that he will incorporate popular characters from his Saturday morning TV series into the show.
He added: "It has a lot of new material and a lot of old material. I felt that doing this show so many years later and having the TV show in between - people are going to ask, 'Where's the talking chair?'
"So I've added characters from the TV series to the show."
The Pee-wee Herman Show will run from November 19 to November 29 at the Music Box @ Fonda in Hollywood.
It was reported earlier that actor Johnny Depp was approached about taking over the role for a series of new films.

My mother was so traumatized when they caught him wanking in the porno theater. LMAO.

I watched Pee Wee's playhouse religously. The word of the day is, 'deathhag.' Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Nope, not child abuse. Misdemeanor kiddie porn and his famous movie theater wankfest though: http://www.thesmokinggun.com/mugshots/reubensmug1.html

And the last line in the article: "It was reported earlier that actor Johnny Depp was approached about taking over the role for a series of new films." I just can't picture Johnny Depp as Pee Wee.

Peewee has a huge cult following still!
People remember the Playhouse fondly, apparently!
And- PeeWee's Big Adventure also enjoys cult status.(also- I just watched it last week)

And- I didn't think he got convicted for kiddie porn..he collected Erotica, and as I understand it, they had issues with some of the more period stuff..really early things..It was all eventually returned to him, I believe. I think they were just looking to get him, after his wanking conviction.
( Very early paintings often had child nudes. Some of the subjects we would find very disturbing, ie: naked children playing suggestively with little yappy dogs, things of that nature. I mean, Alice In Wonderland author Lewis J. Carroll has often been viewed in a particularly pedophiliac way...)
At his trial, one of Reubens' magazine dealers said he would buy magazines in bulk, with certain more erotic subjects ..but specify nothing with children.
In particular he collected some of the old 60's muscleman mags. I saw a documentary on the making of them..wow! It was like porn central..naked guys in suggested poses, playing leapfrog, you know that kind of stuff...even people like Jack Lalanne was involved- though he claimed never to have known what was truly going on or participated. or participated. One of the magazine producers was a known chicken hawk...wish I could remember the name of the documentary..it was pretty good.

Anyway- he's worked regularly since PeeWee..in some pretty good stuff:
Nightmare Before Christmas, Murphy Browns' secretary,
Buffy the Vampire Slayer...Batman Returns...Mystery Men, among other things. Lately he's been in Pushing Daisies.

Hey- he has to have a cult following:
Nike did a sneaker in reference to him:
    and I quote:
In early 2007 Nike released a collection of Nike SB sneakers called "Fallen Heroes". The collection was loosely inspired by Milli Vanilli, MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice and Pee-wee Herman. Pee-wee's sneakers use a grey and white color scheme with red detail, and an illustration on the insole of a man in suit sitting alone in a theatre with his hand on his lap, suggesting Reubens' 1991 theatre arrest.

Oh- and BTW- I still have my Talking Peewee Herman doll! original- not quite Mint - in Package...and his voice is still recognizable. So many of the PeeWee's had problems with the talking mechanism.

I can only think of him nowadays as the guy caught enjoying himself in the cinema. Pee Wee was annoying - like Mr Bean, only not funny.

PEE WEE!!! I loved that show. Taped it Saturday morning, we'd all get drunk and watch it Saturday night. I have seen Pee Wee's big adventure more times than I should admit. We have a steakhouse here called The Alamo. Every time we go there, I have to say "The Al-a-mo!" like Pee Wee.

Having been a music fan for so many years, I gave up a long time ago worrying too much about personal lives. Unless it's seriously criminal, I just want to know about the art. Pee Wee's child porn/art (whatever) was creepy, but the whacking it in a theater? Big whoop. Which reminds me...can you name two famous people shot in a theater? Abraham Lincoln, and the guy that sat in front of Pee Wee.

i have always loved paul reubens. not just as pee wee but as the coke head in cheech and chong movies and bit parts in others like Blow.

    (FANTASTIC movie, BTW)
he really got the book thrown at him when he got caught and i think he was treated unfairly. there is nothing he has done in the past but been a great entertainer to me and all that he does in his private life has no relavance - unless it is hurting someone else.

Hell yes Pee Wee does have a following. I was pissed off they canned him and scrapped his show. If the show comes up to San Fran im totally there. Hope it includes his appearaqnces in the Cheech and Chong films. Pee Wee first made his appearance in Up in Smoke and I think he was in Nice Dreams

Pee Wee wasn't in Up in Smoke but was in Cheech & Chong's Second Movie and Nice Dreams. Before that, he played one of the waiters in the fancy restaurant in The Blues Brothers.

    Remember Cap'n Carl?

I can't believe Phil Hartman helped Paul Reubens create this character, and then they had some sort of falling out...Paul was a prick to him I guess.

I got an email(yes, I'm on Pee-Wee's mailing list) a few days ago about these shows.

Come join Pee-wee, Miss Yvonne, Cowboy Curtis, Jambi, Chairry and all your favorites, live on stage!
Pee-wee fans book now using the code 1HOORAY and receive a special one-time-only & too-good-to-be-true offer for $10 off orchestra tickets!

The show is at The Music Box at the Fonda. Shows run Nov. 8-Dec. 19.

I saw Pee-Wee solo at the Park West in Chicago many years ago. We're seriously considering a few days in L.A. to catch the show and, of course, Scott's tour.

True, but I didn't agree with the uproar. It wasn't like he was wanking it in the local Cinemark. He was in a porno theater FFS. A porno theater that was showing standard hetro fare. Who was the victim? (besides the guy seated in front of him)

If I'm going to hold anything against Ruebens, it's his treatment of Phil Hartman. Not wanking at a porn movie.

Rock on, Pee Wee. Good luck in your second coming.

Yep, that's how I feel about it too. A whole lotta fuss over something that plenty of other folks in porn theaters do every day and don't get arrested for. Why? Because the people who run the theater expect it. We know that. But some jackass has to notice it's Paul Reubens doing the wanking. If he weren't Paul Reubens, who'd give a shit? No one.

Two little old ladies are sitting in a theater when one leans over and whispers in her friends ear, "Pee wee Herman is sitting next to me and he's jacking off!"

My Lord!" said her friend, "We should leave right now."

"We can't." the first lady replied, "He's using my hand!"

Guess who's on the Jimmy Fallon show right now? Yep. I never watch that show but just happened to be flipping channels and there was PeeWee, in all his costumed PeeWee glory. Video will probably be up on nbc.com tomorrow.

If there were ever proof that things go out of style and come back into style it would have to be the popularity of Pee-Wee Herman. Or Paul Reubens, if you are so inclined. Reubens is back with a Broadway show, based on an original 1981 production, and basically acts out like the TV show I grew up with.
Last night, many stars attended the opening night after-party, including Susan Sarandon, Martha Plimpton, Parker Posey, Alan Cumming, Anthony Edwards, John Waters and Rosie O’Donnell to name a few.
You must remember the tv show, right? Well, the live show is sort of like that…

The New York Daily News sums it up best:
There’s no story line, per se. Childlike Pee-wee chills, sings and dances, dreams of flying, reads pen pal letters from around the world (including prison, an allusion to Reubens’ real-life scrape with the law) and shows a cartoon and a vintage educational film about good manners.
I just remember being a kid and plopping down in front of the tv and watching Pee-Wee’s Playhouse all the time so I’m dying to go see this show!

I read the Cindy Adams column today and she didn't give it good reviews. Let me know if anyone would recommend it.
Opening night, Pee-wee Herman got a standing ovation. At the begin ning. As he walked out nervously. A second standing ovation. At the ending.

Whether they loved him because they're old fans or supported him because of his bad ways, who knows. I only know when he was on TV 20 years ago, I never watched. I have standards.

This audience cheered. Screamed. Hollered. Applauded. Some guy behind me had laugh cramps. I wondered what he was watching. In his skinny gray suit, talking to stuffed chairs and fake birds, Pee-wee's amusing for 15 minutes. Ninety minutes without an intermission -- I wanted to kill myself.

    So why was everyone there?
Chita Rivera: "I'm crazy for him. He's adorable." Alan Cumming: "I first saw him in Ojai, Calif., through an earthquake." Parker Posey: "Can't remember where I first saw him. But I can't remember anything." And where'd she get her lambskin jacket? "I can't remember. Someplace, I think, called Marnie." She then showed the label. It said "Mayle."
Richard Belzer: "His surrealism enchants me. He's sweet. Nobody's hurt with his humor. He's like Mr. Rogers from another planet." Fran Lebowitz: "He's original. Very different. He's my friend." Wendy Williams: "My son, 10, is familiar with his work, so we're all here. The whole family came." Director John Waters: "Please. As a kid I saw Pee-wee, Howdy Doody, everything."
    S. Epatha Merkerson: "What do you mean, why am I here? What's wrong with you? I was on his TV show."
"Oh, excuuuuse me . . . hey, you can't win 'em all."
Pee-wee Herman. On Broadway. Coming next, maybe Bernie Madoff?

This is the first bad revue I have seen. All the legitimate theater critics and publications have been uniformly amused and tolerant. It certainly isn't great theater but it is apparently well done and amusing and some interesting effects.
We are angling for house seats.
I will let you know how it was in my lame opinion. I am a Paul Rubens fan anyway so I am sure I will enjoy it.

I have always loved Paul Reubens. In one of my favorite episodes of "Everyone Loves Raymond", he played Amy's brother Russell, who owned a comic book store. It was classic. Unfortunately, right after the "kiddie porn" stuff (which was still only an investigation) Ray Ramone decided not to have him back, and replaced him with Chris Elliot and changed the characters name to Peter. I liked Reuben's "Russell" so much better the Elliot's "Peter".
