I was going to buy one this weekend for my little neighbor! He is a real sweetheart who helps around the neighborhood. Does anyone have any other ideas? He is 14.
    Wanna see my grandkids?

I was going to get a prepaid Visa as a XMas gift for for a friend who's been out of work....though not one from Wal Mart. So the question is....is the problem on the Visa end or the Wal-Mart end?

My thoughts are that it has less to do with Wal-Mart and more to do with pre-paid VISA cards in general. I received a VISA Vanilla card for my birthday with $100 on it...I've had the most difficult time using that card...no one, especially restaurants, wants to take it. By the time I actually was able to use it and redeem the rest, that $100 card ended up being worth about $70...they are NOT worth the hassle. In fact, they're a scam, period.

The problem is on the WalMart end. I've purchased Visa Debit Cards with no problems whatsoever. I just fired off a letter and e-mail to WalMart corporate offices about this nightmare.

If you want it to be for the Walmart, their "gift" cards do work.

Good question, I was given a debit card from Clayton (for looking at a house) and it worked everywhere I tried to use it at. Since this is Walmart, who knows.

The card I purchased from WalMart is gold, with a gold bow on it. It says WalMart at the top and the Visa logo is on the bottom, right side of the card under the hologram of the bird logo.

I had a similar problem with Vanilla Visa. Just stick with Visa, Master Card or AmEX, use the brand names only. Green Dot is another offshoot of the WalMart /GE Money thing, so avoid it like the plague.

Seriously ...... for them to have put their name on that card and then turn that very card away is the very height of stupidity. Honestly, I bet whomever gave the thumbs up for the Wal-Mart name to be put onto that card probably has no idea of the whole clusterfuck.....

Very true story. They pay the workerts less then a living wage and barnstorm into cities and towns that dont want their stores. Their stores run the gammet of illegals as cleaning crews to cashiers. I cant count how many wal marts have been raided by the INS over the years , rounding up more then three quarters of the total workforce in the store as working and living in america illegally. I hate this store chain and all it stands for.

Dosent surprize me they duped you into buying their visa card then refusing to take it as payment. I have never and wont ever shop there but I know people who do for some reason, ill let them know about the visa thing.

For WalMart/WalMart.com to NOT honor a gift card that has their name on it is lame beyond words and measure. I have bought gift cards there for friends of my kids with no problem redeeming inside WalMart, online at WalMart.com, or elsewhere. Thanks for the alert on this one.

No problem, Sheri. I've had the regular Gift Cards from WalMart as gifts and had no problems. This is their Visa debit card.

With your wording, you sound like the guy who's on Comedy Central before the Colbert Report. I love his show, but I can't think of his name at the moment. He has the Clusterfuck to the Poor House, that's when he discusses American economy.

I'm sorry for the original poster's troubles. I agree with Chunga on Sprawlmart's business practices. They suck. Target and the rest aren't much better but Sprawlmart has a certain level of arrogance to its practices. The poster in Chunga's response is from a documentary that examines the problems with that corporation. This PBS documentary was also very well done. I recommend reading "Nickled and Dimed: on Not Getting by in America" by Barbara Ehrenreich. The author takes a bunch of work a day jobs in various corporations and tries to survive on the lousy wages and no benefits. Walmart was especially egregious. ---------------- Now playing: dotCommunism - Thank You for Shopping at Walmart via FoxyTunes

Oh, but I beg to differ:

    According to the Indianapolis Star:

September 26, 2007 UNITED AUTO WORKERS OFF THE JOB, Striking back at globalization. By Ted Evanoff

Massive job cuts at General Motors, America's largest carmaker â?? coupled with the bankruptcy of Delphi, America's biggest autoparts maker â?? have provoked predictable handwringing from liberal pundits who worry that America is "losing its manufacturing base." But the wrenching change now buffeting the auto industry defies the usual press formulas. Just listen to Steve Miller--a turnaround specialist who is steering Delphi's restructuring process. He exploded the myth of America's "endangered" union manufacturing jobs at his October press conference announcing Delphi's move into Chapter 11: "We cannot continue to pay $65 an hour for someone to cut the grass and remain competitive."
Take grass cutting. As defined by the current United Auto Worker contract negotiated with the "Big Five" (GM, Ford, Chrysler, and top parts makers Delphi and Visteon), an auto "production worker" is a job description that covers anything from mowing grass to cleaning the toilets. In the real world, these jobs would be outsourced to $8 an hour, no-benefit wage earners, but on Planet Big Five, these jobs get the same wages as any auto line-worker: an average $26 an hour ($60,000 a year) plus benefits that bring the company's total cost per worker to a staggering $65 an hour.
But at least the grass cutters are working for their pay. The UAW contract also guarantees that 12,000 autoworkers get full wage for doing nothing. On the heels of Miller's straight-talk, the Detroit News reported that "12,000 American autoworkers, instead of bending sheet metal, spend their days counting the hours in a jobs bank." These aren't jobs. And they certainly aren't being "lost" to China.
"We just go in (to Ford's Michigan Truck Plant) and play crossword puzzles, watch videos that someone brings in or read the newspaper," The News quoted one UAW worker as saying. "Otherwise, I've just sat."
The coming months will be painful for many American autoworkers. Accustomed to a certain lifestyle, they will see their wages cut in half, jeopardizing second homes, college tuitions, and car payments. One blue-collar Delphi worker interviewed by the Detroit News makes $103,000 a year operating a forklift and fears the consequences if his pay is drastically reduced. But many Americans will ask how a forklift operator felt entitled to a six-figure income in the first place (according to Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average forklift operator wage in the U.S. is $26,000).

Apparently the purpose of the UAW is to create a situation like this.

    Here's a great idea.....bail them out.

I have purchased smelly Kleenex from them, soda packs filled with dead bugs and grass, frozen desserts with odd white spots in it and some other stuff I have blocked out.
One person I know went there to buy a car battery-he was told to go to this part of the automotive department.
He did and no workers were there and did not show up. When he finally found someone-turned out battery prices had gone up about 10 or more in a few months.

Has anyone read the horror novel 'The Store'?
It is about a big chain store that moves in and kills off all the mom and pop stores. It starts out having great deals and then people start to disappear and very disturbing things start to happem.
(and then there are the zombies that guard the store at night)

Also their hiring of illegals to " clean " the stores.

Because most can`t get jobs anywhere else.....they depend on older workers, and young, that have no other options.....the job market isn`t exactly booming right now.....when I worked the Pharmacy at one, their insurance was awesome ( don`t know about now ) and that was huge for older workers.....and there are other benefits that were really good....problem with the option to buy stock is, most didn`t make enough to do it.....also when a Super WallyWorld comes to town, many of the other shops and stores can`t compete.....they go out of business, and guess where those folks go to get jobs

When I worked at Wally's I felt sorry for the lifers- these were folks that had been workers at the previous store chain that Wal Mart had taken over..Woolco I think...
anyway- these poor folks, had 5 years to go til retirement. They had multiple years in with the previous company, and if they quit- they lost their pension, so they had to put up with it.
It was sad, because management knew these folks were hooped, they took advantage of them So you'd have these old folks, working by themselves in departments, doing a good job, because that was their work ethic..
and then you'd have the kids, doing dick all, talking on their cell phones non stop..and slacking to talk with their buddies..
And nothing happened to them..and it was so frustrating for the lifers.
They are the life blood of the store..but do they get raises? No-
And-The kids were hired on at more money than the lifers...
yet it was the Lifers that made sure the store ran, because the kids couldn't give a shit.
Wal Mart is really f%#@ed up-
and it's not just that store.
When I moved out here, I was shocked at how I would go in the Wal Mart here- and think I recognized the people that work there. They all get a "sameness" to them. They have dead eyes..they have no hope - they just hang on til retirement.

And the executives make gobs of money on their backs.

And unfortuntately- I do shop there sometimes...because they have the cheapest prices and I am unemployed right now.

My middle sister is the Jewelry Department manager at our Wal Mart. She makes big bucks, let me tell ya, owns stock, a big retirement package, and gets a 10% discount on what she buys there, except for groceries.

I asked her once if it was true that Wally exploited their employees and she said Yeah, they took a lot of crap. Well, isn't that true about most companies? Isn't the bottom line always the profit margin? When you work for someone you have to take it up the ass, doesn't matter where you work, unless you are self-employeed.

I worked six years for Rockwell International, MSD, building bombs and I never made near what she makes, and let me tell ya, working for federal defense is a royal pain in the ass, and doubt Wal Mart can touch 'em. They didn't want your best, your 100%, they wanted MORE.

It's the third snake bite at a Walmart in that region; I would be looking at my suppliers if I were them. This guy deserves to sue, not something I normally believe but while his reaction was to the anti venom he was reaching around for a fallen child's toy. If a toddler had gone after it's toy the child would very easily be dead.
The store brought in this merchandise as "safe" they should be accountable.

This could happen a lot more... Nursery stock is delivered in dry vans straight from the field.... when our company used to haul freight we would find a snake in about 1 of 4 loads...

Dang! He will get a large amount of whatever he is suing for, too, I'll bet. Sad thing is, technically the store can be held accountable...but I cannot imagine how an employee would be supposed to know about them and clear them out of the store given all of their duties.
