I've throughly researched many of the depression-era gangsters. John Dillinger and Alvin 'Old Creepy' Karpis happen to be my favorites.

The story about the exceptionally large penis came as a result of one of the Cook County morgue photographs. John was lying on the slab covered with a sheet so spectators could view his body. Viewing bodies of criminals was common in those days. Families made a day of the affair.

Anyway, John's hands were secured with a strap to hold to arms into place and covered with a sheet. When viewing the photograph, it does look like he has a huge member, but it is only his arms and hands under the sheet.

Of course, he was a man, so a penis must also be there, but that AIN'T IT!

Here is a link to the photograph in question:

Stephen King wrote a fictional story about John Dillinger in his book Everything's Eventual. I forgot what the story is called and I don't know where my book is at the moment but it was a really good story. Stephen King took the events leading up to one of the Dillinger Gang's deaths from a gunshot wound through his back, into his chest. I'm really fuzzy on the details right now.

They're filming part of a Dillinger movie in Oshkosh WI about a half hour from where I live. It features Depp and Bale (yum yum). Think I'll pay a visit to my old alma mater UWO around this time.

Does anyone remember that movie from like 1980, "The Lady in Red" with Pamela Sue Martin? It was shown to death on HBO when I was a youngster. Anyway, it's about the woman who lured him to the theatre, fictionalized (somewhat). I just got it off Netflix after like 30 years. It's pretty cheesy, but quite entertaining. It's bringing back a lot of memories from years ago.
Chicago during that time was one weird place.

Then there are those rumors that Dillinger wasn't shot down in front of the movie theatre - but someone who looked like him, and they claimed it was him just to be done with the "capture" already.

And then also the other rumor that his huge penis was cut off and put into a jar to be displayed in a museum somewhere...

It's amazing how many gangster landmarks from the 1920's and 1930's are still standing in Chicago.

You can walk from The Biograph Theatre to the site of the St. Valentine's Day Massacre.

    Visiting John Dillinger's Grave

We took a field trip to the Crown Hill Cemetary and Mausoleum today. It's a beautiful place, and very interesting. Quite a few notables are buried there, including President Harrison, two or three vice-presidents, the man who invented the machine gun, Gatling, author and playwright Booth Tarkington, and Eli Lilly. It has a very impressive Civil War memorial, with many union soldiers buried there.

My piece de resistance, of course, was Dillinger's grave.

Giovanni Gnome is a family joke who gets passed among the cousins every year and this year is my turn.

Dillinger had a great shoot out here with the FBI and local police at the Lexington Arms Apartments which still stand today.

One of his partners, Homer Van Meter was shot and killed here in Saint Paul by the Saint Paul Police. Our cops were quie corrupt in the 1930's and as such, it was rumoured that the money Van Meter was supposed to have on him was split between the police chief (who was also at the scene shooting) and the others.

Where he was shot now stands a McDonalds!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homer_Van_Meter

Al Creepy Karpis and Ma Barker were huge in this area too. We actually have a gangster tour here.

In "Dillinger Dead or Alive" he said that Johns family put 2 tons of concrete over his coffin so no one coud ever dig him up. If you can ever read that book there is some great things in there. People say the Govt made a deal with him to get out of the country and not come back. That the fellow who was killed was not JD. In 1970's in LA the paper printed a leeter by I.M. DIllinger. He denied he was little Bohemia lodge, that those were not his clothing they say were his. They finger printed that letter and the prints matched Dillinger. In the La phone book he was listed under I.M. Dillinger. When they went to the apt. the occupant was gone, never to be found.
2 Weeks after the letter made headlines here, the FBI agent who chased him all those years and was a big hero to the Feds when they killed JD put a bullet in his own head. This giving rise to the story that it really was not JD that was killed, they also say the reason they deport Anna Sage the informer and Madam, was they were afraid that even tho they gave her a BS promise that they would let her stay in the US they knew that she would tell everyone that it was not JD they killed.
My own Father was arrested in St Paul/Mpls MN. They arrested him, for being JOhn DIllinger, They looked sooo much alike. When he saw those pictures of him after he was killed in cold blood he said that is NOT JD. In the book the author also tells about the different shade of eye color and scars that this man had and not JD. Good book ,only can get it in the library tho.

Were the photographs supposedly of the real Dillinger from 63 ever published? I've read it mentioned in several places of the pics being sent to different places, but people didn't believe it, but has anyone seen them?

A nice website with bios/pictures of almost all the members of the Dillinger Gang
The author takes delight in describing the later lives of the members who lived to be old men.

That morgue photo of Van Meter strikes me as curious regarding the position of the head and neck. In closeup of his head, it is elevated and turned to the left as one can see the skin on his neck reflecting a natural stretch when the head is in that position.

It may be due to the poor resolution of the photo but I don't see any headrest under Van Meter's head and I'm wondering if rigors had set in and his neck and head was frozen in that position as well as his eyelids and mouth. Of course I realize those photos are pre-autopsy.

    I*m..amazed..that..they..let..so..many..people..in..to..see..the..body.
    Theses...were..some..serious...death...hags..

The body was then taken to the Cook County morgue where the body was repeatedly photographed and death masks were made by local morticians in training, who inadvertently damaged the facial skin. Throughout that night and most of the next day, a huge throng of curiosity seekers paraded through the morgue to catch a glimpse of Dillinger in death. The chief medical examiner finally complained that this mob was interfering with his occupation and Cook County sheriff's deputies were posted to keep these macabre tourists at bay. There were also reports of people dipping their handkerchiefs and skirts into the pools of blood that had formed as Dillinger lay in the alley in order to secure keepsakes of the entire affair.
Dillinger was buried at Crown Hill Cemetery (Section: 44 Lot: 94 )[9] in Indianapolis. His gravestone is often vandalized by people removing pieces as souvenirs.

Reminds me of the quote by Alvin 'Creepy' Karpis a Public Enemy Number 1/member of the Barker Gang of the 30's and his remarking -based on family dinners over at the Nelson household- that Baby Face Nelson was a good father.

I've researched Dillinger extensively over the past ten years. Unfortunately, the bulk of the material presented in "Dillinger: Dead or Alive" was not based on fact, despite the factual-style of reporting.

There is NO doubt in my mind that Dillinger was killed by FBI agents at the Biograph Theater in Chicago, IL.

Nice new Dillinger website. Extensive pics. You'll spend hours if you're into Dillinger.

    http://www.dillingerology.com/

read the Apartment 303 as a starter. very nice. you'll like the exchange with the paperboy. Dillinger wanted to pay him on a daily basis but the paperboy said he could only collect once a month. Upon hearing that, Dillinger gave him what the paperboy said was a 'peculiar smile' ...(as if Dillinger had the luxury of staying in one spot more than a couple days at a time let alone a whole month...)

I remember going on a field trip to The Walter Reed museum in Washington D.C. and the rumor was that his member was in a jar there on display. We were in Jr. High so it was typical that boys of that age would think of something like that. We never did see it, altho some say J.Edgar may have kept it as a trophy or whatever! That's another story!!

I agree, the book is written with the feeling of extensive research but basically most of it is rumors. It would have been a great story for John to get away and live a long life but unfortunately he was gunned down without a chance to surrender for what I believe was the federal crime of taking a stolen car across state lines. Do you know when it became a federal crime to rob a bank?

Before rock n' roll there were gangsters. That was the way to live a healthy, normal life. To all the fallen gangsters and rockstars that made this world a better place for teaching us that longevity is almost a naive way of preventing the inevitable, I say one thing. Thank you and may you RIP.

back during the depression, the underworld would hire folks out like dillinger or pretty boy floyd to rob banks. many of these banks would have been set up in advance with a banker (who had losses to cover before the next bank examination) would be in on the deal. allow the bank to be robbed, give them all they had lets say $45k and report $75k as the amount actually stolen. then the bank robbers would have to kick back a hefty percentage to the underworld plus pay up for 'protection' as they enjoyed their proceeds. that's why when you read about the large amounts stolen and wonder why didn't the robbers just lay low for a year you can see how quickly they went through their dough and had to restock.

if you want to spend some time, check out this updated John Dillinger Slept Here Tour. They show you what the places look like where Dillinger and his pards hid out in the St Paul area. This town was known to be 'wide open' with it operating under the 'OConner Rule' which basically was a corrupt system in which bad guys on the lam could stay if they behaved themselves in town and paid off the cops.
of course, all good things come to an end. 'Everything went well, that is until a combination of factors including O'Connor's death and replacement by a more reform minded police chief, the murder of Dan Hogan, St. Paul's underworld czar who supervised the layover agreement, the Great Depression, and increasing pressure from the FBI under J. Edgar Hoover, caused the O'Connor System to come apart. This resulted in the broad daylight kidnapping of St. Paul brewery mogul William Hamm Jr., and banker Edward Bremer by members of the Barker-Karpis gang.'

i like this rare footage from a witness at the time. he has a wonderful way of speaking.
'so I had my lunch.....other people might call it dinner time, but for a night time mechanic like me, it was, lunch time."

'..since i had a little leisure i took some air outside...'

rare footage of the gun used to make the escape from crown point...damn, that looks good.
and a rare interview with the garage mechanic who was confronted by escapee dillinger holding a machine gun he had liberated off of a prison guard.
dillinger makes off in the Sheriff's car singing 'get along little dogie, get along.' fun to see the outtake from the reporter and the reaction from the crowd.
