Hollywood walk of fame

I heard they actually charge the celebritys to have a star on Hollywood Blvd?

Does anyone know if that is true and how much they charge?

I know that "Dick" Johnny Grant somehow helps decide who and who doesn't get a star on Hollywood Blvd.

I cannot believe some of the people who are allowed to have stars. I mean... Ricky Martin???? How very 1999... and one mainstream album!

Yup they do:

Q: What is the cost of a Walk of Fame star ceremony?
A: $25,000 upon selection. The money is used to pay for the creation and installation of the star, as well as maintenance of the Walk of Fame.

found that here:

If that's the case, I would find it hightly amusing to nominate someone REALLY random and raise the money to get them a ceremony...

And now for something COMPLETELY different: (but along the theme...)

Street performers dancing on Donald Trump's star!

Now that I look at it again...it kinda looks like he's stumbling drunk...*blink*

I always was so mad when I heard of someone who did not deserve a star got it Such as Donald Trump. When I found out years ago that people buy or sponser a person I was even more disappointed because that should be a real honor and it's not anymore.

Another issue is that they only award 1 S*T*A*R* a year posthumously.
I can think of far more dead actors who don't have a S*T*A*R* who are worthy (of receiving one) than many of the untalented, but connected living ones who get 'em !

The star is not free. It is quite costly. Johnny Grant does the honors, and it is a fun time. Hollywood Blvd was seedy last time I saw it, but still exciting to stroll the sidwalk to see the famous names.

Even if you have a fan club raise the money and nominate you, you still have to pass a committee. That being said, you can bet the William Morris Agency has a lot of input on that board.

I was just reading "This is Hollywood" By Ken Schessler and its $4800 dollars they need to come up with to get a star on the walk of fame.

But this book is dated 1993 so I am sure its gone up!!!

Hollywood Walk of Fame

I saw Elizabeth Montgomery finally got her star Posthumously and thought it was a cool topic.

Hollywood Walk of Fame is a sidewalk along Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, United States, which is embedded with more than 2,000 five-pointed stars featuring the names of not only human celebrities but fictional characters honored by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce for their contributions to the entertainment industry. The Walk of Fame is maintained by the self-financing Hollywood Historic Trust. The first star, awarded on February 9, 1960, went to Joanne Woodward.

The Walk of Fame runs east to west on Hollywood Boulevard from Gower Street to La Brea Avenue and north to south on Vine Street between Yucca Street and Sunset Boulevard. The Walk of Fame is nearly a three and a half (3 1/2) mile round trip walk.

Each star consists of a pink five-pointed star rimmed with bronze and inlaid into a charcoal square. Inside the pink star is the name of the honoree inlaid in bronze, below which is a round bronze emblem indicating the category for which the honoree received the star. The emblems are:
• Motion picture camera for contribution to the film industry
• Television set for contribution to the broadcast television industry
• Phonograph record for contribution to the recording industry
• Radio microphone for contribution to the broadcast radio industry
• Twin comedy/tragedy masks for contribution to live theater

The Walk of Fame was created in 1958 by southern Californian artist Oliver Weismuller, who was hired by the city to give Hollywood a "face lift". Many honorees received multiple stars during the initial phase of installation for contributions to separate categories; however, the practice in recent decades has been to honor individuals not yet represented, with only a handful of previous honorees being awarded additional stars. In 1978, the City of Los Angeles designated the Walk of Fame as a Cultural/Historic Landmark.
The Walk of Fame began with 2,500 blank stars. A total of 1,558 stars were awarded during its first sixteen months. Since then, about two stars have been added per month. By 1994, more than 2,000 of the original stars were filled, and additional stars extended the Walk west past Sycamore to La Brea Avenue, where it now ends at the Silver Four Ladies of Hollywood Gazebo (with stars honoring The Beatles and Elvis Presley).

Firsts

• Gene Autry is the first and only person to have been honored with all five possible stars, for his contribution in each of the five categories.[1]
• Diana Ross is one of only a handful of celebrities to have two stars in the same category, one as a member of The Supremes and one as a solo artist.
• In 2002, the Walk of Fame broke tradition with Muhammad Ali's star. His star is displayed on a wall of the Kodak Theatre, due to Muhammad's request that he not be walked on.[2]
• In 2003, Britney Spears became the youngest singer to accept a star on the Walk of Fame at only 21 years old. With this achievement, Spears tied with former Little House on the Prairie actress Melissa Gilbert for being the youngest person to accept a Walk of Fame star.[3]
• In 2005, companies became eligible for Walk-of-Fame-type stars; the first recipient was Disneyland, in honor of its 50th anniversary. Company awards are on private property near the Walk, and not part of the Walk itself. Companies must have a strong Hollywood presence and be at least fifty years old to qualify for this award.[citation needed]
• In February of 2006, Judith Sheindlin (better known as Judge Judy) became the first and only television judge to be awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.[4]
• On January 24, 2007, Los Angeles television station and CW network affiliate KTLA-TV (Channel 5) became the first television service (station or network) to be honored with a star on the Walk of Fame. The picture on KTLA's star shows a satellite dish, denoting a television broadcast station.[5]
• On November 18, 1978, in honor of his 50th anniversary, Mickey Mouse became the first cartoon character to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The star is located on 6925 Hollywood Blvd.

Suzanne Pleshette got her star two weeks after she passed..... with all of the ones given to some of these stupid ones I saw... they should have given ones to the good ones before they passed.....

It's kind of a joke, and you have to pay for it. Basically, if you have any kind of fame at all and are willing to pay, it's yours.

I read Suzanne Pleshette is getting one now after she's dead. She deserved one a long time ago!

LOS ANGELES (AP) â?? It's another story of stoned celebrities in rehab. Only these are real stars.
Sixty-one stars from the Hollywood Walk of Fame â?? including those of Charlton Heston, Cary Grant, Clark Gable and Frank Sinatra â?? have been removed and stored while a $500-million hotel-shopping-housing project is built on Vine Street near Hollywood Boulevard.
Eight of the terrazzo star squares crumbled as they were removed from the walkway. "We saved the brass. They'll be rebuilt," said Tim Maxwell, project manager for Webcor Builders, which is involved in the construction project.
The stars were placed in a secure warehouse, where they'll remain until the project is completed in 2009.

I'll take Hollywood Blvd. now compared to 25 years ago...in the 70s/80s, I literally would not get out of my car there after twilight (and it was a dicey proposition even in daylight!). Very much like Times Square in NYC during that same time period.

I'll take the commercialism to the RAMPANT prostitution, drug dealing and drive-bys any day, thank you! I mean, the word SHITHOLE doesn't even begin to describe it!

When we were there last Oct. (to do Scott's tour), I felt very comfortable walking there, even after dark (though it's STILL not Beverly Blvd., there is serious improvement).

With regards to who is/isn't represented or who does/doesn't deserve a star. These star are not paid for by city or any government organization. They cost a lot of money and are paid for with private funds. If a celebrity wants a star they have to pay for it. Sometimes fan clubs will raise the money, sometime relatives will buy them. It's more a matter of money then how deserving the person is.

There's little question that in actuality the entire process of getting a S*T*A*R is very political. I remember the stink when ROBERT EVANS made sure his (then) wife ALI MCGRAW got a S*T*A*R after 2,3 films to her resume. Lots of actors who should have received one well deservedly never have, or were presented so damn late that you just sort of wondered 'Why the oversight ?'

Case in point; NATALIE WOOD, who'd been in the industry since she was 8 years old, and was one of the top stars of the 1960s for example didn't get one until after she died.

I believe that they only will award one a year posthumously as well. I know that fans of SHARON TATE (self included) have tried to get her one for years now. Tedious process, particularly when, again, they only grant 1 a year for someone who's passed away. Many fan clubs for actors that have passed away will submit their 'star' each year in the hopes of finally having them recognized with the 'honor' of a S*T*A*R. The funny thing is that there's probably more actors/actresses who are dead that are actually worthy of receiving one than the non-talents who continue to have one bestowed upon them.

Aparrently around the Colusseum in Rome a group of guys wander around in Gladiator costumes. If you fall into the trap of taking a picture with them they ask an inordinant amount of money. If you refuse to pay you get seriously menaced and have your camera taken. In fact they do it whether they are in the pic or not.
