Thread: D.B. Cooper

There has been specualtion that he was former military, and with jump training, I think, based on quizzing our 82nd Airborne friend, he certainly could have survived the jump.

What may have happened to him once he hit the ground is a completely different ball of wax.

I agree that the FBI is just pissed that they never apprehended him. It's like the Jimmy Hoffa case; Hoffa is certainly dead, chances are good that whoever orchestrated it are dead, why pursue it?

I read somewhere recently (I think the Daily Oklahoman) that the FBI recently returned the $5800 to the man (he was around 10 when he found it on a picnic) who found the money. He put one of the bills up on EBAY but didn't sell it.. his reserve price was around 2k I think.

If the serial numbers matched and it was confirmed that it was part of the money D. B. Cooper had extorted, then why would they return it to the guy that found it. I would think that it would still be held as evidence in an open case or returned to who ever paid the original $200,000.

Interesting. Also interesting how the parents battled it out to have the kid be able to keep the money?!

The money, btw, would have come from the airline (I believe it was NW Airlines, or pehaps still NW Orient at that time) they are based here in Mpls.

    It is indeed, John.

If he survived the jump, what happened to the money?

If he didn't survive the jump, why was his body and the rest of the money never found?

I had never heard of this before last night. We were watching Without a Paddle or whatever that movie is called. Then I got on msn.com and they had an article about him, then I get on here and there's a whole thread about him! What is someone trying to tell me?

one report said Cooper resembled Bing Crosby. wonder if they checked to see what Bing was doing on that day.

On the news this morning there was a blurb that it prabably was not his parachute. Wow! How many abandon parachutes are laying around in the wildeness anyway? Or is it a dodge by investigators? The money was his however, not some other stolen money washed up on shore.

That was a very badly written article.

So the chute wasn't his but the FBI hasn't ruled it out? That's what I got from it.

Very cool, thanks for the read.

I recall having seen a special a few years ago (on A&E possibly) with an older woman and her son or daughter having said that her husband passed away in the 70's or 80's and he confessed to being DB Cooper on his deathbed. She said she didn't know what he was talking about but their son/ daughter did.

She was pleading with people to disprove the story as her husbands confession was a terrible burden to her and she wants it to be nothing but last minute crazy talk. She gave the authorities his information and they supposedly had always had him in mind as possibly being Cooper. Sadly, her name has escaped me.

I remember when they profiled D.B Cooper on Brad Meltzers Decoded. They investigated it deeply and they went to the guys house who they thought it was which is now a gift shop.
First off some of the money they recovered was from that general area.
When they searched I think it was with a FLIR camera they found a dead spot in the attic that it was a hiding place for something.
According to the show it was a Northwest Airlines pilot who after the hijack mysteriously made large deposits to his savings. His brother came up with a picture of his brother holding a large bank bag.
It's interesting to see if this is the same guy the new leads are leading to is the guy featured on Decoded.

Yes, Jersey, I saw this too and it seemed to me to be the most plausible thoery as to who Dan Cooper really was. I saw the news video on Yahoo this morning and became annoyed when the Yahoo reporter said the investigators were not giving out the name yet. Well wait until they do then and don't waste my time.

If this is correct, Cooper lived for about 30 years after jumping out of a 727. Incredible.

Much like some others, I always hoped he'd made it somehow.

I'd like to see the case solved.

I remember seeing an interview with the stewardess he handed the note too years back... she said he was quite pleasant.

Brad Meltzer did do a convincing job for this guy being D.B Cooper

I'm not really well-versed in this story, but of course have heard a fair bit. My one question is why would he have left so much money by the river if he survived? The kid found the money a long time later. Even if he landed successfully and had to leave a bunch of the money, wouldn't he have gone back to get it?

I'm assuming it was all in one bag. Maybe it was in two and he dropped one while parachuting?

    Jersey,

I was unable to locate that specific article when I did a search and will have to try a more detailed one later when I have a bit more time to look.

Is there any real information contained in the article? Whose name is mentioned? Does it say anything about what the possible connection of this person and/or lead might be to D.B. Cooper?

Unless something earth shattering arises that will break the case wide open, I too think the scenario outlined and researched in Decoded seems to make a very strong case for who D.B. Cooper actually was.

    Thank you.

Like some others have said, D.B. Cooper has been dead
for like 10 years only now has the FBI got some DNA to
    match.

To almost prove it was this person.

In some ways I hope they never find out who he was. The world needs a little mystery now and then. Wasn't D.B looked at as a folk hero?
Brad Meltzer had a good case, these people have a good case, we may never know.
We'll never really know if Jessie James was killed by Pat Garrett, we'll never know if it was really John Wilkes Booth that was killed in that burning barn. Did the Sundance Kid escape from Bolivia?
In some ways some people need a little mystery surrounding them.
It's like having your hopes all built up about going someplace or doing something and when you do go or do there could be great disappointment there.
Certain legends need to live in our minds no matter how bad they were. Sometimes people root for the bad guy.

The FBI's case just hit a wall. First they couldn't get a DNA match from Coopers tie, they can't get a conclusive match on the fingerprints.
    D.B. your legend lives.
In all honesty who would you rather root for someone who sticks an airline for 200K? The crooked CEO or the whistle blower who turned him in.
My money is on the Decoded guy but I hope they never find him.

First this all was planned long before they flight. His name isn't db cooper. Id think he useed a fake name to get a ticket. These were the days before stupid crazy security.. not only could you smoke on the plane but even walk on the tarmack. The only dna they have is a tie.

I dunno I just don't think that woman is related to db cooper, or whoever he is

I watched the Decoded episode on this the other night. I believe the man they investigated was him. They proved another man jumped out of the same kind of plane at a higher altitude and faster speed and survived.

The guys brother and best friend are convinced he is the man.

Like noted above, the guy went from making pennies, to having a chit load of money literally overnight. Then the guy found the money near his house, and there was the hiding spot in the attic.
