Woman suffocates in her grave as police try to dig her back

A 45-year-old Greek woman was buried alive this week in Peraia, a small town south of Thessaloniki in Greece.

A group of children playing near the grave heard the woman banging and shouting and alerted cemetery workers, who quickly tried to dig up the grave.

Tragically, the woman died before her rescuers were able to reach her inside her coffin.

Time to start putting the little bells with string that reaches down to the corpse/person that is buried.

This could have been avoided with embalming.

Dead people don't bleed due the heart not pumping blood ,tendons are cut so the corpse doesn't sit up during cremation , the heat shrinks tendons causing the body to sit up...so preparation for the cremation would have found the woman alive...

Hi Drew! I am currently in funeral school (almost finished thank goodness). Anywho, I have boxed up and hauled MANY a body to the crematory and assisted in putting them in the retort. We have never cut anyone's tendons. It is against our state's laws and many other surrounding states to do so. It is considered mutilation of a corpse. The body does not sit up. It actually curls up into a fetal like position before burning away completely until there is just bone remaining.

Put a wifi hotspot in every graveyard. Maybe a usb port in the casket for charging your phone or laptop. Do selfies as you decompose. The possibilities are endless.

This is one of my worst nightmares. I've stated that I don't want to be cremated, but being buried alive... I'd die of a stroke or heart attack. As others have said, how in the world does this happen?!

Ugh, that freaks me out so bad. I'm claustrophobic. There's a big reason to be embalmed. You sure don't have to worry about being buried alive if you're embalmed.

Reminds me of one of the stories about Saint Augustine burying people alive by accident so they would make graves with a narrow cylinder and a bell up top, they would tie a string around the hand of the deceased just in case they weren't dead. There is also this story of a woman on her way to the graveyard, her husband wanted her to go out in style so they threw a parade for her and having her being carried around in a chair she went under a low hanging tree which proceeded to cut her forehead and woke her up. She was still alive.
