I wonder what caused him to fall off the wagon after 22-23 yrs of sobriety? I feel so bad for his children.

    RIP Brandt.
For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them.

What's so good about goodbye, when the best was yet to come?

RIP PSH! (Dusty) Twister is one of my favorite movies and Dusty was my favorite character in it. How sad that after 23 years he fell off the wagon. Feel bad for his kids. (And DAMN!!! 5 bags.....he was serious!)

WHAT a waste! This guy had more talent in his little finger than half of the guys Hollywood insists are 'stars' have in their entire bodies.

I also heard this, and as late as this morning, so I'm guessing it's true.

While perusing his IMDb page, I was shocked to see just how many movies he was in! Such a powerhouse of an actor, and he could really disappear into a role. This surprises me, since he had quite a distinctive look, which you'd think would pigeonhole him.

Some of my favorite roles of his: Lester Bangs in Almost Famous, Reverend Veasey in Cold Mountain, Scotty J in Boogie Nights (love the scene where he makes a move on Mark Wahlberg's character!). Sad that he couldn't overcome his demons. I can't imagine going back to heroin, after being clean for so long. And I didn't realize he had three kids. A waste.

This makes sense. I was wondering why he was found in an apartment that was a few (blocks or miles I can't remember) from the multi-million dollar place that she and he had bought a few years ago.... I was wondering about that.

There was this blind item that ran back in December which many suspected was him. (If it's marked solved soon after the cause of death is announced, then we'll know it was about him.) I'm not saying that this had perpetuated this death hoax, but there were some rumors that all was not well with him.

There are other drugs that can be injected, but heroin is what he had a problem with before and the police said that heroin was found in the apartment.

Incidentally, the envelopes the heroin came in was marked - and police in these cases often go after, and charge those who sell it with manslaughter. It has happened on quite a few cases I have worked here in MN.
I read on CNN that law enforcement is going to try to track down the source of the heroin. Of course, there is this gem from addiction specialist Dr. Drew:
That's why investigators likely won't have to look far to find where Hoffman could get the drug, Pinsky said.
"It's right outside his house, I guarantee you," he said, "or somewhere nearby."

They may have a actual drug buy on camera. He was witnessed, on Saturday, buying from two men next to an ATM, where he withdrew cash.

Hopefully they are getting the video as we speak.

It was a pretty recent split. I have no doubt she booted him due to the drugs.

I read this too earlier.. it sounds as if the guy who witnessed this was fairly certain it was Phil ... the police can certainly get his financial records to see if he did indeed make an ATM withdrawal.

According to the witness, Phil bought from two men wearing messenger bags. If true, this probably speaks of a large ring and police may want to get to the source. I do wonder however, if Phil had been a skid row addict, would police be working as hard on getting the supplier?

    I doubt it.

Now, they found 50 bags in his apartment? Sounds like this man wanted to die.

Holy shit it's 50 now? I had heard about 8 before, 7 in the bathroom and another on a table somewhere. That is fucking crazy!

Now TMZ is saying 10 bags, 8 empty. I don't know. The envelope had Ace of Spades on it. Now I can't stop thinking of the Motorhead song. I love that song.

Lot of info here about the bags of heroin. It sounds like the ones marked he had in his apt were probably mixed with fentanyl.

Great pics here - the last known ones of him taken only a few weeks ago, he does look rather bad... A lot of pics of the apt as well here and the kids.

He had only moved to that place at Christmas time..

I've never used heroin but when my ulcers were at their worst and I was on oxycodone they had switched me to a fentanyl patch to see if bypassing anything they could from my stomach would help. I kept that thing on less than a day it kicked my ass so bad. And that was the lowest dose patch of fentanyl they had.

I keep thinking of that Ace of Spades shit. The first line in the song is "if you like to gamble". PSH certainly was gambling with his life, and lost.

"you know I'm born to lose, and gambling's for fools, but that's the way I like it baby, I don't want to live forever"

People around here are dropping like flies from this shit. Glad I never started, I know I would have loved it and probably ended up the same way. Fentanyl is a trip, I messed around with those patches for a while. Used to rub the gel inside my mouth. Ugh, so glad i'm done with that crap. *knocks on wood* Dammit Philip, you were an excellent actor. Still pissed from this one.

We find people dead all the time with the fentanyl patch still in their mouths from chewing it.

    Stuff aint no joke.

I know when I was in the Navy, (back when dinosaurs roamed the earth) they we would give fentanyl and versed for the pulling of wisdom teeth. We had to check and cross check if we had any leftover and it had to be witnessed by 3 of us, as we usually squirted it down a sink.

He was one of those actors that no matter what sceen in the movie it was, if it was on the channel I turned to, I had to stay on and watch it.
    It's just a damn shame.

OMG. When you guys were mentioning the Fentanyl patches, it finally dawned on me that my husband has been on these for almost a year for his knees. He says he doesn't notice any weird effect until he has to wait on a refill and he runs out. Then his knees are killing him. It's 25mcg patches.

Ewww. People chew the fentanyl patch? I guess I am not surprised. I had to go to detox when I got off the oxy. No one in there could believe that A. I only got it by prescription and B. I only swallowed pills. When someone asked me how I took it I was like "ummm... I swallowed them?" I was so naive. I also saw my first person with track marks and it was scary as all hell. I am so glad I never got that bad. But it could be any of us. Some of the people I met in there seemed so normal. The girl with the track marks was 28, cute, an Army veteran with 3 kids.

Buttercup that is what happened with me. It wasn't until my rx would run out that I would realize it was affecting me. I tried to just stop and it was like a living hell. I had been on 10mg of oxycodone every 4-6 hours for my ulcers. It gets you without even realizing.

About 5 years ago my mom fell and fractured something or other in her back, she was a mess, week in the hospital, etc.

When we got her home we put the fentanyl patch on her. Few hours later I went in because music was blasting from her TV. There she was standing up and dancing in place to some oldies.
    I almost swallowed my tongue.

lmao! I had just about the opposite reaction. I totally felt like it was kicking my ass. I could barely stand. I took it off before the first day was over.

Hey Jop!!! Good to see you! Congrats on your 6 years. I know you won't take it for granted and I won't take what little time I have again for granted either. Look at PSH he was clean for 23 years! I guess it really does never end. Keep up the great work.

I'm curious since you work in the industry... do you see more heroin abuse now? I was the ONLY person in detox for pills. There were 3 people in for alcohol and everyone else was heroin. All walks of life. My friend was in the same place a couple years ago and there was one person in for heroin and almost everyone else was on pills.

He was an awesome actor - the only thing good about Capote and kept me watching was him... It sounds like he knew the game and so why would get buck wild with it? It sounds to me like it was a "Last Hurrah" kinda thing. I hate that his kids will have to grow up with this in hovering over their lives... SMH...

my daughter had to take hydrocodone for a very short time for a surgery she had and in that 6 week period she did have a detox off of it and she said she could tell it for a few days. I just tell both my girls to NEVER try anything because once you take it you get hooked instantly and will always chase how good it felt and you can never get it again and that's what drives the addiction. Even if that's not true i want them to think it is and with drugs like heroine that sounds to me like a good rule of thumb

Yep, those Fentanyl patches are nothing to mess with. I have been in a pain management program for almost 10 years and get a script every month for pure high dosage oxycodone pills. At one point, they were no longer helping the pain as much, so my doctor put me on the patches (100mcg). They really helped the pain, but wow, I lost a LOT of weight and had to finally switch back to the pills. All this stuff is such a vicious circle- I work full time in a physically active job and with the medication and ongoing spinal injections and procedures can remain relatively pain free, however my tolerance is now so high I find the relief slowly diminishing. I will never choose the extremely uncertain surgical route and constantly worry about keeping the entire situation manageable- I HAVE to work, as I need the income and incredible benefits my employer provides. My doctor is excellent and knowing my situation so well, tries to keep treatment as conservative but effective as possible- PM practices, even the best ones, are really scrutinized by the DEA these days- there's no way my doctor would ever put me back on those fentanyl patches unless there was an extreme medical need.

It blows my mind to think of heroin + fentanyl....the rx for instant death. Wow....just fucking wow.

    RIP Phil...

A lot of younger people are dying in my area of the world, too. I'm talking 30s and 40s...just dropping dead. And many AREN'T hard drug users. Many don't do drugs at all. Explain that.

I loved him in several movies. Always thought he was hilarious as "Dusty" in the movie Twister.

Forgive me if this has already been posted, but I just saw this come across the wire.

Authorities investigating the death of actor Philip Seymour Hoffman found close to 50 bags containing what is believed to be heroin in his apartment, two law enforcement sources familiar with the probe said Monday. Investigators also found several bottles of prescription drugs, and more than 20 used syringes in a plastic cup, the sources said.

That was when I first noticed him. His character was one of three that really had made an impression on me (aside from William H. Macy's and Don Cheadle's). I remember him in Along Came Polly. I could tell he had a presence and talent. I was happy to see him get accolades for his later work.

This news hit me hard. At first I was like, "What?! Please tell me this is a joke."

Seriously, when will these celebs learn? We lose several a year to crap like this, and we lost Paul Walker and his racing buddy to them driving a broke down car at high speeds. I know we laugh and poke fun at people like Justin B. when he gets arrested over and over again in a week, but seriously, someone needs to get control of these people. We are talking about people with families and loved ones like each of us have. When will they wake up?

I used to think like that - but really, there are normal, non-celebrities who wrestle with demons like addictions and dangerous behavior in general. We just hear about the celebrities doing it. I'm not sure if this makes sense outside of my head.

I completely agree with the non-celeb issue as well. Those people just need as much help. The biggest problem we have is people get star struck and praise every move these people make, and they rarely get in any trouble at all when they do screw up. You have morons on twitter with the "free so and so" BS every time a celeb is busted, regardless of what they do. They can kill people in front of 87 witnesses and 32 cops, and these idiots would be all "free so and so" just because they are a celeb.

That blind item that I mentioned upthread has been updated as "solved". The subject was indeed Philip Seymour Hoffman. The blind reported that he was seen relapsing back in November while he was filming Mockingjay in Atlanta. Very sad.

I love blind items and had seen this one when it was originally posted. Totally thought it was PSH so I wasn't completely surprised that he died... just sad.
