I don't know if this is true or not maybe someone from across the pond can confirm.
I do believe this is true if I remember right. Although I didn't understand anyone booing Jimi. They wanted bubble gum music...(no offense please) and Jimi was far from Bubble Gum.

A few days ago I pulled out my cd of Pisces,Aquarius,Capricorn and Jones Ltd. I played it three or four times including while I got ready for work yesterday morning. My favorite cuts are Cuddly Toy and Hard to Believe which the latter was played at least ten times. I honestly was reflecting just yesterday morning how all the Monkees were still alive. What a shock! I was a Mike girl,

I can *possibly* imagine today's "stars" visiting a child like Rhonda (with full entourage, press agent & photographers in tow)...but can you imagine them "staying with the family"...not only once, but apparently at least a few times. *And* keeping in touch with the family through the years. I am sure there are some very privately charitable stars around, but c'mon. Diddy? The Beebs? A Kardashian? Color me doubtful.

If you think a Kardashian could even spell charitable you're giving them far too much credit.

I didn't realize he'd been an actor in England prior to the formation of the Monkees. Played the artful dodger in Oliver I guess. Very talented dude.

I had that same thought even before I saw a pic of her, when I read they'd only been married since 2009 and she was a dancer. In other words, much younger woman marrying an older, wealthy man. And after seeing that pic...well, I think they need to keep their eyes open for anything out of the ordinary in that autopsy. Ya never know..:

This is true, but it was on an American tour and it was short-lived. Micky Dolenz had seen Hendrix at the Monterey festival and hired him. The negative reaction came mostly from parents who took their children to the shows, but Micky has loved telling the story ever since of Hendrix playing to children yelling "we want Davy!"

The tour opened at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium here in Georgia, and Hendrix left the bill within just a few dates.

As to the instrument-playing, Nesmith and Tork showed up with guitars from the sessions for the first album onward, but weren't given much to do. L.A. session musicians later dubbed "the Wrecking Crew" did most of the playing. A guitarist named Louis Shelton played the famous opening licks on "Last Train To Clarksville" and "Valleri".

By the third album the Monkees had staged a coup and did almost all of their own playing on the excellent Headquarters, using an outside bass player (producer Chip Douglas, I think) and some additional percussion. Over time they mostly went back to using session musicians, though they continued to play their own instruments live.

Fractional list of other period acts that didn't play all of their own instruments: the Beach Boys, the Byrds (first singles/album), Simon and Garfunkel, the Mamas and Papas, Paul Revere and the Raiders, Sonny and Cher, Jan and Dean, the Association, Gary Lewis and the Playboys, Dino, Desi and Billy, the Grass Roots, the Righteous Brothers, Joe Cocker, the Carpenters, the Fifth Dimension, nearly every Stax act, nearly every Motown act, nearly every Phil Spector act, Elvis Presley, and Frank Sinatra.

    Question "didn't play"

I'm a bit stumped. Simon and Garfunkel? Hmmm. That was an acoustic guitar and a voice. Sonny and Cher? That was two singers. The Righteous Brothers? All they did was sing. The Beach Boys? Well, Brian played bass, Carl played lead, Dennis played drums....... and SINATRA? What am I missing here?

Fractional list of other period acts that didn't play all of their own instruments: the Beach Boys, the Byrds (first singles/album), Simon and Garfunkel, the Mamas and Papas, Paul Revere and the Raiders, Sonny and Cher, Jan and Dean, the Association, Gary Lewis and the Playboys, Dino, Desi and Billy, the Grass Roots, the Righteous Brothers, Joe Cocker, the Carpenters, the Fifth Dimension, nearly every Stax act, nearly every Motown act, nearly every Phil Spector act, Elvis Presley, and Frank Sinatra.[/QUOTE]

Interesting trivia right here about Jimi and bubble gum...In his earlier days, he performed on the road tours as one of the Starlighters...Remember Joey Dee and the Starlighters and the "Peppermint Twist"....BTW, Joe Pesci was one of the ORIGINAL Starlighters...

Inside Edition showed a photo of his home in Florida and it was quite modest, average in fact they had those glass louver windows, I can't find a photo of it. Surprisingly they said he wasn't even a millionaire.

I was never a big fan, but I remember in the 60s my friend got all the bubble-gum cards of the Monkees, and on the back of them they made a big picture of them, I guess it must have been about 40-50 cards, just thought I'd throw that in...

I was completely shocked over his passing! I LOVED The Monkees growing up. Granted, I was a little girl but still loved how silly they were. When I was in high school, they showed re-runs and I watched every one of them. Bought all the albums and played them over and over. (My taste in music ran from The Monkees to The Who and Zeppelin. Diverse child, I was.) I had THEEEE WORST crush on Micky but Davy was the close second. Got to see them in '86 at Great America in Santa Clara. A whole '60's show with Gary Puckett, the Grass Roots and The Monkees headlining. It was so awesome! I dragged my poor aunt along and she actually had a ball! I also got to see Mike Nesmith at one of his solo concerts. He was really good but I wish he'd decided to tour with the rest of them at least one more time.

R.I.P Davy. Thanks for the music and the laughter. You will be dearly missed.

There is more exposure to the stars now. Davy did have a drinking problem and it was rumored that him and his 35 year old wife were in an abusive relationship. By the way, his wife is bigger than him so I don't think it was a fair matchup.
York and Dolenz have also had drug and alcohol problems for years.
It will be interesting to see if he was taking Viagra because you are not to be taking this if you have a history of heart problems.

Not sure what stumped you. I was just making the point that it was no big deal for any act, whether a singer or a group, to use session musicians. Even the Beatles had Eric Clapton and Billy Preston sit in a few times on instruments a Beatle would normally have played, in addition to the countless string and horn players, etc. As to the others listed: Simon and Garfunkel were obviously not just a guitar and a voice, if you listen to records like "Sound Of Silence" (hit version), "I Am A Rock", "Mrs. Robinson", "Scarborough Fair", nearly anything after their first album. The Wrecking Crew is particularly prominent on their last album, "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and toured with them behind it. And the Beach Boys, of course, used session musicians probably a little more than half the time between their second or third album and the period after "Pet Sounds". Dennis even used Hal Blaine as the drummer on his solo work. Obviously, I was being facetious tossing Elvis and Sinatra and other singers in there, but the point is that they didn't write or play their own stuff to anywhere near the extent that the Monkees did...so I've never gotten what the knock on the Monkees was all about. They didn't play everything? (Shrug)... Neither did Diana Ross. That was my point. Sorry if it wasn't made clearly enough.

I'm sorry and I hope you don't take this as me being mean, maybe just a thought on most people we comment and I've done it to, but why do we naturally think its they took drugs...he may have been clean for years, (I personally don't know)...and now we think it might be a heart attack from Viagra.....I know as most death hags do, we want the story to be some drama thing, maybe he just had a heart attack...I does happen....I had one....I'm also a little peeved that Davey got a few days of mourning yet they are still talking about Whitney....Davey deserved just as much attention....he was actually still performing, whitney had not but was trying to....and as I said, I'm not saying to be mean it just jumped out at me at the moment. :P

I just watched a lovely tribute to Davy on the Bio Channel. He really was a talented and sweet guy. He spoke of a church he had purchased in PA., and was going to turn part of it into a museum and a place to put on plays. It was his dream. He was 62 at the time and I hope he managed to complete his vision. I feel lucky that I was able to see both the Monkee's and Hendrix in concert together. It was a strange moment then but has blossomed into a beautiful memory.

I agree. Although I want to qualify that by saying that I think Davey got as much attention as he needed and deserved and Whitney was way overblown. There simply isn't enough drama in "lived a long life, worked hard, died in my sleep" as there is in "threw it down the drain and overdosed". And we the public always crave the drama
