Georgia Man Executed with Cameras Rolling

DeYoung executed with videographer documenting his death

JACKSON -- With a video camera recording his last moments, Andrew Grant DeYoung was executed Thursday night at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Center for killing three family members.

DeYoung was declared dead at 8:04 p.m., fewer than 15 minutes after the process began. Lying prone, he barely moved throughout the execution. His parting words were: "I'm sorry for everyone I've hurt."

For the first time in Georgia, a videographer was present in the execution chamber, documenting DeYoung's death and his reaction to a new three-drug lethal injection that anti-death penalty activists said caused unnecessary pain and suffering. The videographer, accompanied by a woman taking notes, stood off to the side and was barely visible to witnesses.

I know that when the feds executed the Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh there was a large group to witness his death which was on closed circuit TV. Does that count too Cindy? Just curious.

Was the closed circuit TV used for viewing only? Or did they tape it? If it was taped it would count.

Those bleeding hearts that cry about the pain and suffering of murderers really work my last nerve. Their victims didn't have it that easy. I guess if they put them in a room full of puppies to be licked to death, someone would bitch about that.

I remember seeing an electrocution on one of the Faces of Death videos only to find out later it was faked.

Sounds as if he went peacefully...nothing to complain about, but a waste of good videotape...

THIS! The murderers being executed damn sure didn't take the time to think about the pain and suffering that not only their victim, but the their families would go through.

I'm all for bringing back public hangings. To hell with convicting someone and letting them sit on death row for 20 years wasting tax payers money. If they are convicted and there are multiple witnesses and/or film of them committing the crime, send their ass to the front of the line.

Foun out that this was the first one done in GA but it's also the first one to be videotaped in 20 years:

According to Dieter, DeYoung's execution is the first to be filmed in the United States since 1992, when the court ordered the filming of an execution in a California gas chamber. California later abolished that method of execution.

There's something really weird looking about the executee (is that a word?). It's like his one eye is looking one way and the other is looking another way. If I were talking to him, I wouldn't know which eye to look at! Which, I guess is a moot point...

It looked real though, didn't it? It turns out a lot of the footage in the Faces of Death series was fake. There was some real-life footage, and the videos of the slaughter houses were real.

Was it painful? How do they know... Did someone ask him during it. Or was it supposed to be based on his reaction. Were they videotaping because it is a new drug concoction?

Me too. On Saturdays in the middle of town with a picnic. Make it a fun family outing.

That was Robert Alton Harris. I was living in Cali at the time of his execution. I had forgotten about him. They did film his execution but as far as I know it has never been released. He was granted 4 stays of executions in 9 hours before and after the scheduled 12:01 am execution.

Thanks Karma it's too hot and sticky to be Googleing anything (106 here yesterday).
I'm sure the DeYoung tape will ever be released either.
