SOMERSET, Pa. - December 9, 2010 (WPVI) -- Millionaire John DuPont, who was in prison on murder charges, was found dead on Thursday morning.
He was 72 years old.
A spokesperson for the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections said Du Pont was found unresponsive in his bed at the Laurel Highland State Correctional Facility. He was pronounced dead at 6:55 a.m. at Somerset Community Hospital.
Du Pont had unspecified health issues and had been ill.
Du Pont was serving a 13 to 30 year sentence for 3rd degree murder in the January 26, 1996 shooting death of David Schultz.
Schultz was a 1984 Olympic gold medalist who was killed outside his home, which was on Du Pont's estate, Foxcatcher Farm in Newtown Square, Delaware County. Du Pont fancied himself a patron to wrestlers and built a world-class training facility at his estate.
For two days, Du Pont barricaded himself inside his mansion. It was extremely cold the second day, so police disabled his heater. When Du Pont went outside to inspect it, he was arrested.
In1997, the heir to the Du Pont chemical company fortune was found guilty of third degree murder and also found to be mentally ill. He was sentenced to 13 to 30 years in jail.
