Peter Sellers

Even though Peter Sellers had a long history of
illness it was still tough for me when he passed
in 1980.

I've always been a fan of British movies
and Peter made many good comedies
(and a share of bad ones too.)
Being There is one of his best IMO.

Cheers,
Doug

Was he Bi-polar, Schizophrenic or did he have multiple personalities? They never would say just what his mental illness was but they kept eluding to the fact he was born rich and spoiled by his mum. The last time I heard, rich was curable but spoiled was forever.

I think it was everything you list, but of course the
massive heart attack he had might have contributed
to his final curtain call...

One wishes the illness of wealth was more widespread
but alas tis not to be...

Oh how I cried my eyes out when he died in 1980. I felt like I had lost my best friend. I sent a sympathy card to his family and his daughter sent me back a very nice letter with a photograph of him as Inspecter Closeau. She was so touched by the outpouring of grief for her father from his fans. Now that is class

I loved him too.......so many of his other films are rarely mentioned or seen. If you can find it, rent "The BoBo" - Sellers as a singing blue matador LOL........(well, ya gotta see the movie to understand that reference).
He did another one where he was a con artist pretending to be a film director so he could steal a bunch of gold. Can't remember the name of it, but it was fantastic too.....he did so much more than Clouseau, going way back to the Goon Show in Britain. His personality apparently wasn't the best, but comics usually are screwed up psychologically for some reason..

The Bobo was pretty lame...but for some reason I can remember liking it way back when.

I think The BoBo is sort of an acquired taste - maybe it should be viewed as a product of the 60's, when there was a feeling of experimentation going on, and Sellers was at the head of the pack. I remember the name of the his other film I also liked .."After The Fox".....had a neat theme song and a few priceless moments. Today's movies are so "formula". Everything fits neatly into a box, (even the soundtracks sound alike), but there was a small moment in movie history during the 60's when a wild and free type of feeling came across and I think Sellers personified that for awhile......

"Does your dawg bite?" "No" (ankle bite, ankle bite, snarwl, ankle bite). Looking whipped from this dog, he looks up.... "I thought you said your dawg didn't bite?" "That is not my dawg". Oh how I miss Peter Sellers.

The Party is one of my favorites. I remember that my dad let me stay up late on a school night to watch it with him. Funny movie. Great memory.

I loved Peter Sellers but I must say, after seeing that Geoffrey Rush film about him (The Life And Death Of Peter Sellers), my idea of him as a person sure changed.
Apparently, as the movie tells it anyway, Peter Sellers was a real Bast*rd. A totally UN-likeable jerk (and that's putting it politely).

Claudine Longet ... here's the wiki line...
Longet was arrested and charged with the 21 March 1976 shooting death of her lover, Olympic skier Vladimir "Spider" Sabich, at his Aspen, Colorado home after he had showered and was preparing to dress. Sabich was a very handsome athlete with no lack of female companionship when he met Longet. As their relationship progressed, Longet and her three children moved in with Sabich, radically altering his bachelor life. There were widespread rumors of discord between the couple before the shooting. Spider had told friends he wanted Claudine out of his house but had taken no real action to evict her because he adored her children. At the sensational trial, Longet claimed the gun discharged accidentally as Sabich was showing her how it worked. Despite the fact that the autopsy found that Sabich was bent over with his back turned to her and Claudine was no closer than 6 feet (1.8 meters) from him, she stuck to her story that it was a tragic accident. Williams very publicly supported Claudine throughout the trial, even escorting her to and from the courthouse.
The Aspen police made two enormous blunders which turned the tide for Longet. They took a blood sample from her and confiscated her diary without warrants. Longet's blood contained cocaine and her diary showed that her relationship with Sabich had turned bitter. Since the evidence was not obtained legally the prosecution could not enter it into evidence. The gun was also mishandled by non-weapons experts. It was given to a policeman, who wrapped it in a towel and put it in the glove compartment of his unit; for 3 days it was unaccounted for.
Put on the stand, Longet reiterated her innocence and pleaded for mercy because her three young children needed her. The jury acquitted her of felony manslaughter but convicted her of criminal negligence, a misdemeanor, and sentenced her to pay a small fine and spend 30 days in jail. As a generous gesture, Judge Lohr allowed Longet to choose the days she served, believing that this arrangement would allow her to spend the most time with her children. Longet chose to work off most of her sentence on weekends. Once the trial was over, she took off for a vacation with her defense attorney Ron Austin. Austin left his wife and children to do so. Longet and Austin later married and remain together, residing in Aspen.

Didn't he have an NDE some years earlier?

I read somewhere that he was told to "go back" because it wasn't his time yet.

Though Sellers was a great success professionally, he did not fare as well in the personal realm. The son of an overprotective, controlling mother, Sellers often behaved like a child, throwing tantrums and demanding his wives' undivided attention. Sellers married four times, to Anne Howe (Sept. 15, 1951), Britt Ekland (Feb. 19, 1964), Miranda Quarry (Aug. 24, 1970) and Lynne Frederick (Feb. 18, 1977). He also sired three children: Michael (April 2, 1954), Sarah (Oct. 16, 1957) and Victoria (Jan. 20, 1965). Sellers' wives and children were forced to suffer the effects of living with an obsessive perfectionist whose attentions focused mainly on himself and his career.

You know I hear that alot, that someone's a jerk or ass in real life and that influences how people end up thinking about them.

Really, I don't care how someone acts in real life, it's not like I'm going to be their friend, I'm just going to watch, listen or read what they have to offer.

Peter Sellers was the funniest movie actor of them all. I wish more attention had been paid to his last movie, Being There. It has the same theme as Forest Gump and was a better movie without all the film splicing.

After I saw the movie, The Life and Death of Peter Sellers I went surfing around on the net and there was a lot about how he disinheirited his children, the short marriages, etc. Talented person, but introverted and kind of cruel. Isn't it odd that's so often said about the funny men?

Weirdest thing of all- his son Michael, died from a heart attack (same as Peter) on the exact date Peter died- 26 years later! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael...rs_%28actor%29

Movies

I loved him in Lolita and The World of Henry Orient. I also loved Dr. Strangelove, especially his balding American President, who can't believe what idiots surround him.

I read that he hated Britt Eckland so much, he claimed she was responsible for his 6 heart attacks. He would have nothing to do with Britt -- except to say she was a bad actress and a great girlfriend -- or his daughter Victoria. Their daughter, Victoria Sellars, neglected by both parents, was mixed up in the Heidi Fleiss scandal; a pro evidently. She's still close to Fleiss.

Weird.... his son Michael died on the same day of the same month that Peter Died.
Both Michael and his father, Peter Sellers, died of a heart attack on the day of July 24th. Peter in 1980 and Michael in 2006. Its rumored that his son never got over the rejection from his father. Shame, he was only 52 years old. Well, since I am a bit older then that....it seems still rather on the young side to me. LOL

They were an item for a very short while. There's a picture of them holding hands together in a number of books.

Apparently, before his first heart attack he used to do "poppers" (amyl nitrate) with Britt Eklund. My ex-husband used to do those all the time, and yet he's still alive . . .

My favorite movies of his were There's a Girl In MY Soup and I love you alice b. toklas.

Sellers was great! I think the fact that he was screwed up only adds to his appeal! he used to buy cars, then tire of them, giving them away the day after. Also he married the late and love Lynne Frederick - lucky sod!
A true comedy great that would give many of todays so-called 'comedians' a run for their money.

How interesting is this trivia about Sellers and his son Michael:
Both Michael and his father, Peter Sellers, died of a heart attack on the day of July 24th. Peter in 1980 and Michael in 2006.

Yet Lynne Frederick's b-day is July 25th...just a day after.
