    Question Steve Fossett

Why can't Steve Fossett be found? Do you ever wonder if he just decided to run away from his family and so on? Or do you really think he is dead?

I'm not sure but I definitely think that way about that Enron scum Ken Lay.

Perhaps a better question to ask might be: do we really want to find Steve Fossett?

For me, personally, the answer is: no.

I'm sure there's been a lot of to-do over his fate, but I have a hard time caring about where he is or what he is doing, just so long as I never have to hear about him ever again.

I know he was a wealthy fellow and all that, but if you asked me if he ever did anything worthwhile with his life, I just couldn't tell you.

    I think was dropped.

I lived near there for 17 years before coming home to Iowa. There is no where you can set a speed record. Others would have done it. The place he took off from is 15 minutes to area X. The other side of the road from from 51. That is where they built the F117. That is a no fly zone. I think he had cameras and was dropped. Look for him to be found in the spring or late fall. Area 51 in like the slight of hand. The real stuff takes place behind Tonoapah. I think he knew what he wanted and counting on playing dumb. They have it all greened out on Google Earth.

Steve Fossett -- dead or alive?

So whaddayathink? What a great plot for a movie. Maybe he is on the lamb and doesn't want to be found? Perhaps recovering from facial reconstruction surgery as part of a witness protection program? Or was he overconfident and crashed his plane into a mountain? Abducted by aliens?

He is probably dead. I am not surprised he was always doing off the wall things.

I'm pretty convinced he probably died of exposure, and has since become coyote chow.

Not a pretty way to die.

Dead. He would have set off his tracking signal on his watch had he lived. Or done something else for proof of life.

What's really interesting is that the search parties have been finding other wrecks that have been lost for years and years bringing closer to other families. In a tragic sort of way, Fosset did them a favor by disappearing.

    Dead

Having lived not far from where he took of to find a place to "set a speed record". Come on! If there was a place there, people would have done it decades ago. He flew over one of the most top secret places in the US. Area 51 keeps people looking and area X is where the F117 was tested. He was 30 miles north of X and I'll bet he was not what he seemed to be. I'll bet the plane had cameras. Look for his crash to be found next spring.

It bothers me that people just wind up missing. I know our wildlife pretty much takes care of messy stuff, where rescuers can't get to right away, but goodness, not have a body is not really closure. I think he's dead too.

if he didn't die on impact, which seems most likely to me, he almost certainly has died from exposure by now.

What is left of the plane is in a hanger for now. I looked at Google Earth and found the runway near Yearington. Money says he was going to play dumb and use that old plane to get a photo. If you look at Google Earth you'll see that area is all greened out. Sorry there is no green anywhere near there. They're out there.

I'm think he's dead and I also think he was up to something sneaky when his plane went down. As Onehung noted, he was in a real iffy area.

Just something hinky about it to me.

He was looking for a place to set a land speed record!!!. They have that, the salt flats. He took off 10 minutes away from restriced air space. He didn't file a flight plan. Reno tower never heard from him so he had no intention to climb. A man of his weath in a beat up old airplane? My guess is a SAM took him down. Area 51 has private security. I would guess Blackwater. Area X has active duty SEALS. Area X is in an area where there are no roads for miles. Deer Hunters who have gotten too close were escorted off before the ever got to a point where they could view the valley. OK, my guess is he was a spy who got dropped out of the sky. My guess is he had information that something big was outside and they wanted a picture since they know when the birds are overhead and stuff gets moved. Hey, don't take my word. Do a Google earth and look at Yearington. You'll see an old copper mine and small airstrip. The Town of Tonapaha is all DOD. Take a look and show me where you can break a speed record in the mess of rocks. Then look at Hawthore NV. Tell me what you see. He'll be found when the time is right. You can walk right up to the fence at 51. Try and get within 5 miles of the fence of X and you'll turn up missing. When they have a fire no one is allowed in. They have their own fire control. As far as all FD's are concered it is a let it burn policy.

the civil air patrol has stopped searching and will only respond to what they deem to be a credible lead. i do believe a small private group is still searching though.

It could go either way...area 51 or the mountains..too close to call. If he crashed into the mountains, he or his plane will not be found until spring. The snow has started.

Makes sense to me..the whole story of speed record was fishy and with the crashes they have in that area that weren't found for years no flight plan seems very careless for someone of his experience

I told my husband this (keep in mind I married someone who thinks like me), and he said, "Makes sense, that was part of the deal."

He was already rich. Area 51 is not the most secure area of Nevada. AS the crow flies he was 15 minutes from res. air space. I think he was not what he seemed and had a real time camera and was counting on getting in and out as a well known adventurer. There was something out in the day light someone was willing to pay big bucks to see. My guess is he bet and lost. No may day, never got high enough to contact Reno tower, mistakes a pilot of his background would not have made. Besides there is no place there to set a speed record. I've hunted a lot of that area and it nothing but Mts and rocks.

Isn't the Civil Air Patrol that group of fucking nerds that I used to beat up in school, with the little red caps and the goofy white shirts? Yeah, that's who I want looking for me, some pimple-faced dorks with model airplanes all over their rooms and severe speech impediments.

    Hey, I take that personally!

My husband was one of those guys. Just for the record, he has good skin and no speech impediment. Plus I think those model airplanes are kind of cool, in a nerdy, goofy kind of way.

So you really think it was Area 51 military that got to him? I really don't know much about it, other than the alien autopsy. Do you have any good links on Area 51 where I can read more about it? Yes, it does seem a stupid reason to go out flying by yourself, to look for a place to set a land speed record. Seems that information would already be common knowledge, it's not like the terrain hasn't been mapped yet.

Assuming something less sinister happened (not Area 51 casualty and not intentional disappearance), my bet is he had a sudden stroke, died and crashed, or crashed and died.

No pilot would have made that area a place to set any records. He is either shot down, and won't be found until they decide he should be found, or he's being held...my guess he's dead. I'm really sorry about that too, I like Steve Fossett. Onehung is correct about the terrain, and what he was probably up too.

If his wife knows something, I know they probably got money out of the ass, but maybe they striked up a deal where he flies someone under the radar, they pronounce him dead and she can claim on the big life insurance. Then she can collect and get the hell out of dodge and live with him somewhere, where no on knows where he been hiding just to get out of the public eye or something. Just a thought.

He was. 51 gets all the attention (as they want) but there are two other areas that you can't get close enough to even see. Google Earth just shows a green blob. As was pointed out that area has been mapped. Why would a billionaire not go to the Salt Flats? Since I want to remain alive, that's it.

MBalmr, I have to disagree. If somebody was going to come and see me laying in my own poop and whatnot, I would want it to be a certified medical or rescue professional, who has seen it before. I wouldn't want some awkwardly skinny and high-pitched teenager with self-esteem issues who is then going to run to the nearest tv reporter to tell him that I pooped myself and am crying for Jebus and my mommy.
