Thread: Larry Linville

    Larry Linville

Larry Linville played Col Frank Burns on Mash. I think he played the part perfectly. I couldn't imagine anyone else doing it justice. When he left the series it wasn't the same for me. David Ogden Stiers replaced him and although he was great, I still missed Frank.

I got to talk with "Pvt. Igor" when he was selling his cookbook. Jeff loves to talk about MASH. He told me a lot of stories. Larry really was Frank Burns and quit because he was not getting paid what Alda was. I was also lucky enough to meet Gary (Radar) when he was in a good mood selling art. He was really close to Stevenson in real life. I took a chance and asked him about Larry. Wrong topic.

What did he say? or did he just get irritated.

Wow, I thought Larry and the rest of the cast got along great. Mash is one of my all time favorite shows. What did Gary have to say?

Sorry to go a little bit OT, but is it true that Gary Burghoff has deformed fingers on one hand? I read that somewhere, and apparently that was why you never really saw his hands on MASH - he was always holdng a clipboard or something.

  6. #6
My daughter told me that the other day. I have the entire series on dvd. We have tried to get a good look at his left hand but have had no luck as of yet.

I am also a fan of Kojak. Have you seen Telly's finger on his right hand? It looks like a talon or something.

You can't get a good look at it because he always made sure to hold a clipboard in his hand or somehow disguise it. Every now and again you can see that his fingers are misshapen, smaller. Poor guy. Talk about type casting. All anyone remembers him for is M.A.S.H. and his left hand.

I met him when he visited my college. He seemed cool--a little self-deprecating as a matter of fact. He loved speeding around in CA in his sports car.

I love the Frank Burns shows. When he left it wasn't as funny.

I heard he quit is because he had a 5 year contract and felt he could not do anything more with his character. And when him and Maragaret split up it really reduced his role!

heard he was quite the drinker in real life??

I also heard that he considered himself a master thespian and wanted to move on to more challenging roles.

He just turned around and walked away. His face said it all. Yep, I pissed off Radar. He does have messed up fingers and try as I might my eyes kept going to his Hand. Scotty from Star Trek also had a bum hand. Lost some fingers on D day.

I never actually met him, but I did see him at a "St. Joseph's Table" event at a little Italian church near downtown LA. (Catholics, especially Italians, will host a "St. Joseph's Table" in honor of the saint on his feast day, March 19. It is usually a spaghetti dinner and it's free, the point being to invite the poor and homeless in for a home-cooked meal. We did one at our house one year, and we had all the participants bring canned food and clothing that we donated to a local homeless shelter). In any event, I was too starstruck to go talk to him, but he seemed like just a regular guy.

His book, Never have your Dog Stuffed, was fabulous.

His latest book, Things I Overheard While Talking to Myself, just came out and I can't wait to read it too.

Always liked MASH. Definately one of the best shows ever. Really liked Col. FLaggs character also.

I saw Jamie Farr and Disneyland with his family and he didn't seem to mind all the attention. Smiled a lot, shook a lot of hands, and didn't seem to mind that everyone was interupting his day at the park.

I remember when I was a wee lad, I went to Seaworld in FLA and I was terrified going through the tunnel with all the fish/sharks swimming all over. I kept thinking the tube would shatter.

The Submarine Ride was awesome with the cheesy styrofoam fish, etc.

The ride I was terrified of was the Shrink Machines, Monsanto's Inner Space

    re: Larry Linville

Yes, Danny, from what I understand Burns liked to have liquid fun . Someone else said that he considered himself a "real thespian". During his talk he discussed his classical training at an academy in London. If I'm not mistaken, he may have also studied there at or around the same time as the actor who played...Al Bundy on "Married w/Children". This was awhile ago, so I could be wrong about that. He considered the Penn brothers (Sean and Michael) quite precocious as youngsters. I believe he also said that he read for the lead in the Mike Nichols film, "The Graduate". We know how that ended...Finally, he regaled us with a story about how he saw Alan Alda at the airport, after M*A*S*H ended. He decided to have a little fun so he said at the top of his lungs (with a hick accent) "Lordy be, Martha!!! There's Alan Alda!!!!" A crowd materialized and converged on Alda. Linville said he made his plane, he wasn't sure about Alda. He was very cool.

I think the first season was one of the best. The reason they got rid of spearchucker is they found out there wasn't any african-american doctors in the korean war!!!

I have the first three seasons of MASH on dvd...funniest episode involves visiting Major General "Iron Guts" Kelly dying of a heart attack while humping Hot Lips...most belly laughs in one episode.

The final couple of seasons were too serious and preachy, many of which were directed by Alda. After Hawkeye and Hot Lips made nice there was no fun left.

If you are a disney freak AND a death hag, check out this link:

    http://www.gettingit.com/article/306

It's the best of both worlds!

I used to be a disneyland freak (my husband and I got engaged at the Blue Bayou) until I fell and broke my arm in two places in the park on New Year's Eve 1999. It was a drizzly day, they hadn't wiped up a clam chowder spill very well, and the rain combined with the clam chowder made for a very slippery patch. It would have been okay, but the park folks treated me like shit, said that I wasn't hurt, and pretty much told me to go away. I realized at that moment that disney was just another money-grubbing corporation. I hired a lawyer and they offered to settle for $500, even though I missed three days of work, had to go to physical therapy for almost a year to get full range of motion in my arm, and the worst of all, was stuck in the ER on New Year's Eve 1999 instead of Disneyland, for which we had bought tickets for two years before.

A totally heart-breaking situation for me, as I lived and breathed disneyland since I was a kid. In spite of suffering bodily injury, the worst part of the situation was the loss of the fantasy as disneyland being the happiest place on earth.

Can you really be sure it was clam chowder?? *urp*

It sucks when corporate robots treat you like crap, when they could have reinforced your love for disney and smoothed everything over by handling the situation completely differently. Short-sighted morons.

A friend of mine was eating at one of the casinos here in Vegas. A waitress dropped a sizzling hot platter of fajitas right on his head. Gave him a pretty good whack on the noggin, minor burns and messed up his shirt and jacket. They hustled him away to the back where security personnel began asking him how much he'd had to drink (not a drop) and other butt-covering type questions. Then after quite a while of this, they gave him the bill for his dinner that he never received. The response: The server took it to your table. It's been sitting out there. He told them to shove it.

He was a long-time player at this place too. That pretty much put him off of going back there. He's not the "sueing type", but it sure made him think about it.

My brothers who served in Korea never missed an episode of Mash. They would have tears in their eyes from laughing.
Larry was a mean drunk. Ask all 5 of his wives. After mash he was arrested for domestic battery but so was Potter LOL He hated his role after a while because he was the butt of all the jokes and his character wa so negative.
He also had a dgreee in Engineering.
I loved his character and loved mash . I hated it when they took the show off the air.

One of my all time favorite shows. I can't think of anything as well written today. I'm other would disagree though.

I have met Loretta Swit a few times. She sells her own line of jewelry and travels to gem fairs. She's actually been doing that for years and years now. She's very tiny and a bit frail these days.

I hated Alan Alda becase i was in HS in 1973-4-5 and this is pre vhs so I'd drive 15 miles on a fri an Sat nite just to see an old Marx Bros movie at midnight in a theater. All Hawkeye was doing was copying Groucho. Alda was committing blatant plaegerism MASH helped America lose the Viet Nam War. Now the reruns are helping America lose in Iraq. Americans are just as stupid now as they were then. Who cares if we lose a war? Who cares if 25 million Obamas migrate to here? As long as it's PC.

    I agree!

Many years ago I read an interview with Jackie Cooper. He directed something like 10 episodes of MASH in the first season. (Yes, THE Jackie Cooper). According to him, Larry Linville and Wayne Rogers were the only NICE members of the cast. I don't blame either one of them for leaving, though. Frank Burns was becoming too much of a one-note caricature, and Trapper's role was getting less and less significant. At the time Wayne Rogers was big into stock trading --and very successful at it--so he figured that instead of standing around the set all day with little or nothing to do, he could make more productive use of his time.

I heard that Lindville was very friendly and was well liked by everyone on the M.A.S.H. set. I guess nobody is nice all the time. I doubt any of us would fair any better if we were famous, except me of course.
