George Sanders has always been my "favorite" suicide.

Of course, he was married to, not one, but two of the Gabors (Zsa Zsa and Magda). I imagine after that the Long Dirt Nap must have seemed like a vacation.

"Dear World, I am leaving because I am bored...."

    Wow.

I had forgotten about Freddie. He seemed to have it all when he killed himself. What a terrible waste of talent.

    Karl Dane

Actor/comedian Karl Dane was a big star in the silent era. He had a mansion in the hollywood hills and reconized wherever he went. When sound came in his voice was unsuited for sound. His career was over.

In the end he was force to operate a small hotdog stand outside the gates of MGM where he had once been a big star.

In 1934 he seated himself in a chair inside his hollywood apartment, spread his old clippings on the floor and shot his self. He was only 48.

His body lay unclaimed in the morgue until MGM buried him in Hollywood cemetery.

Bela Lugosi's serial "Whispering Shadow" features Karl Dane...I didn't think his voice was that bad!!!

Clara Blandick, who played Auntie Em in The Wizard of Oz killed herself on April 16, 1962.

Suffering form severe arthritis and impending blindness, Clara fixed her hair, dressed up in her best outfit, placed her favourite photos and memorabilia around her room and overdosed on sleeping pills then pulled a plastic bag over her head.

Lupe Velez. It is actually a myth that she did her self all up pretty only to drown in her toilet after throwing up her enchiladas plus her drugs that she tried to OD on. Still ,very tragic, as she was preggers at the time, and she knew it.

This is a great Carole Landis site if anyone is interested. There was "speculation" by her family that she did not, in fact, commit suicide, but she was murdered my Rex Harrison, who she was dating at the time.

This is probably the best, most comprehensive site you will see for a movie star. It is well done. Too bad, I liked her...but she was clearly troubled the last 10 years of her life.

    http://www.carolelandisonline.com/

    Not on this site---

I remember reading somewhere on the internet a few years ago that she was a big self-injurer and that it was sometimes difficult to cover the scars during filming. Not sure if that is accurate as I haven;t been able to find the site again or any corroberation. Might make a bit of sense, such a tragedy...

I think he may have been an early victim of the Hollywood machine. One of their little tricks in those days was to speed up the soundtrack to a movie in order to give the actor a highly unromantic tinny voice that would ruin their careers.

    Here's an unknown...

Lance Colvig, who frequently performed as one of the many "Bozo the Clown"s we all used to watch on television. Lance had serious health problems later in life and opted to end things on his own terms. Lance's father, Pinto Colvig, had worked for Disney for many, many years, voicing the character of Goofy and performing musically with the Three Little Pigs.

    more obscure ones...

Lou Tellegen, silent movie star who looked a lot like Brent Spiner (saw him in a Clara Bow movie). Stabbed himself to death with scissors in 1934 at age 52, when despondent about his career and health.

Everett Sloane (Citizen Kane, The Lady from Shanghai, loads more) killed himself in 1965. age 55, fearing that he was going blind. You wanna see a creepy performance, check him out in 1951 flick, The Enforcer.

Pier Angeli - cute Italian actress in some American movies of the 1950's. Once engaged to Kirk Douglas, and supposedly in love with James Dean. Suicide suspected, but not confirmed.

Wendy O. Williams - lead singer of punk group The Plasmatics. Suffering from deep depression as well as "has been" syndrome, shot herself in 1998 at age 48.

Beat me to it. When the talkies came in the studios did a bit of housekeeping by getting rid of people that wore out their welcome.

Holy Crap! 2 of Bing Crosby's sons are listed:

    Dennis Crosby in 1991, and
    Lindsay Crosby in 1989.

    How horrible.

The Crosby Boys had a promising start to life, but the pressures of showbusiness and their own inability to cope, blighted their lives. They were greatly affected by their mother's decline into alcoholism and a premature death from cancer. Heavy drinking and their emotional problems took their toll. On December 11, 1989, Lindsay committed suicide by a shotgun blast to his head. He was 51. His distraught brother Dennis never recovered from this trauma. He also committed suicide with a shotgun in May 1991, aged 56. Gary later died from cancer in 1995, aged 62 and Phillip died from a heart attack in 2004, aged 70.

    Slightly OT...

What are y'alls thoughts on the methods of suicide used by some of these people? If I were going to do it (and I'm not), I would never think of slashing my own throat or something horrific like that. Do you think the "painful" suicides were trying to punish themselves or something?

Yeah I'd heard men are more likely to succeed than women. I think sometimes when women do it it's a cry for help but when men do it they really mean it. Saying that though, my sister had a boyfriend who was obessessed with his health and was convinced there was always something wrong with him. At least twice a week he would call an ambulance thinking he was having a heart attack or stroke when it was simply a panic attack. She was only with him a couple of months and in that time he'd overdosed 3 times on his sleeping tablets and anti depressants. It's such a shame because he's only 20 and he's such a handsome lad. The problem stemmed from him seeing his dad die of stomach cancer a couple of years earlier at the age of just 42 and it happened to be on his 18th birthday when his dad passed.

Yeah I was thinking the very same thing about Charles Rocket... what a crazy way to go, I can't imagine having the strength/balls to completely slit your own throat. I think I would much rather jump from a building or something to that degree... WOW, we are a depressing bunch aren't we.

May 2, 1999: Actress Lois Hamilton (57), who appeared on Three's Company and The Ropers, was involved in a head-on collision while driving under the influence (cocaine, diet pills, Prozac, Xanax, and other drugs). Lois broke her jaw, several vertebrae, and her hip. Four others were injured in the crash. Later, on December 23rd, she flew to Rio de Janeiro, locked herself in a room at the Sheraton Hotel, swallowed a handful of pills, slipped a plastic bag over her head, and committed suicide.
