Otis Redding - Warning! Dead Pic!

While his song "Dock of the Bay" plays on my radio at this writing, I am reminded of the haunting death photo of him being pulled out of the water after his plane went down.

I remember seeing that photo in the really good Death Hag book - "Too Young to Die" - anyone remember that book?

It's on Amazon - "Too Young to Die" by Patricia Fox Sheinhold. Lowest price is about $13.

Hopefully the photo is in that edition. She's had different editions thru-out the years - "updating" when new people die!

Ask the seller who is selling the book if the photo is in that one before you buy it.

I just tried looking for it online - but no luck. It's a pretty gruesome picture, showing him being lifted from the water. His eyes are closed and face slightly bloated.

I would try and scan a copy of it to put up here, but all my stuff is in storage at the moment...

Not a very good picture, but is it this?

I seem to also remember a different picture where his body is being lifted out of the lake in a crucifix pose (i.e. a person on each arm), and the ice is all broken around him. His head is slightly bowed.

There is actually film footage of Otis being removed from the water too. I saw it on a "top 100 greatest soul singers" show 4 or 5 years ago.

I've seen that pic before, but I thought it was fake. He looked too "good" to me. How long was he submerged? Other than the cuts on his face, I would think there would have been more damage.

    Maybe it's just me?

Was not under that long I do not think. The lake is right downtown and what not.
Interesting trivia...he recorded sitting on the dock of the bay couple weeks before he died. Was going to finish it after the tour....so he whistled the last verse or so and was going to come back and put words to it....And obviously never made it back. So thats why all the whistling on the song.

Ok so I was in Madison this weekend for homecoming and Halloween and decided to take the 2 block stroll from my brothers apartment to monona terrace where they have a bench and plaque for Otis overlooking Monona Lake. I took a few pics...But the actual area where the bench is was fenced off cause they are building a concession stand or something...So I did the best I could!

    All fenced off....

Bench and Plaque....Would have jumped the fence but they had cameras...and I had two dogs with me

Lake again looking straight out..its pretty big...

Looking the opposite way as the last pic..so the lake is right downtown...

try to get better ones soon..there are pics on the net of the bench in its old spot before they built the building there.

    The Otis Redding/Cheap Trick connection.

Here's what I found out in regards to Cheap Trick and Otis Redding.
Rick Nielson, guitarist for Cheap Trick, was in a band called Grim Reapers which was going to open for Redding on December 10 1967.

Here's a quote from an interview with Nielsen:
Before Cheap Trick you were in a band in the late ‘60s that were going to open for Otis Redding on the day he tragically died?
The band was called The Grim Reapers, and it was on the night he died that we were going to open for him, December 10, 1967. The poster for the advertised show was quite creepy too it had like all these plants growing out from what looked like a coffin.

Wow. I am terribly embarrassed to report that it escaped my attention that Otis died in Madison. Being from Wisconsin, I should have remembered that. He was fabulous, wasn't he?

    Fact:
The Bee Gees wrote "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" for Otis, and he told them he would record it after he came back...

If you're talking about the death picture of JFK, Jr. on his FAD page, that isn't real. Or, rather, it's of a real dead person, but not JFK. Whoever that guy was, he'd been in the water a hell of a lot longer than John was.

I really doubt that anyone was allowed to take pictures of John or the sisters being removed from the water. There was no reason to, and that crew was Coast Guard. They'd have been facing disciplinary action if they had taken pictures against orders.

I don't think it was fake. I think he wasn't too bloated because he wasn't in the water long enough. The plane crashed into the water and he drowned - if not dead from the impact of the plane hitting the water.

Yes, it's amazing he's in one piece - as seen in the photo. Altho I don't think he wuld have been if the plane had hit land instead.

Otis's leather jacket he was wearing when he died is on display at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum here in Cleveland. There is also a copy of his death certificate. I think it says he died of head injuries. I was sad to see the picture of Otis being pulled out of the river. He was good looking, and a good singer at that. He crashed on a flight from Cleveland. He sang two songs on Channel 5 here, sang at a club called Leo's Casino, then took the flight to Madison. I remember seeing the video from Channel 5, but I don't know if it is online. I tried looking up the video on Channel 5's web site, but I can't get it to play.

one other note,i read his book a few years ago,and the only surviver(who couldnt swim)said that everyone survived the impact but were stuck in the plane,he remembers everyone screaming, and otis asking if everyone was alright.so from what i can gather otis had head wounds, but just drowned.idk?????

I never saw that photo. Thanks for showing it to us. I remember when he died a long time ago. I was a kid and the song Sitting on the dock of the bay use to play on the radio after his death. My sister use to LOVE telling me "That's Otis he died" and I would get all scared. Ever since then when I hear the words Otis Redding I shudder a bit.

He did look so peaceful in death though. Not bloated at all. Luckily they took him out fast.

I heard somewhere that the reason Otis whistled on "Dock of The bay" was
because he had planned on going back into the studio on another day and record the words. Unfortunately he died before he could finish the song. I don't know how much this is true. But the whistling part makes the song great.

    unihikid Guest
yea there was talk about how he wanted to get the staple singers who were just signed to stax to sing the background part of the song.steve cropper who finished the song and mixed it said it was the hardest thing to do,and cried during the final mix session.
