We have the Leach Mansion in Jensen Beach Florida. A concrete structure completed in 1939, it was sold to the Catholic Church in 1950, then used for campus offices and other activity for the Florida Institute of Technology. It has either been "restored" or is in the process of being so. The island mansion in the previous post should at least be restored to the point of being inhabitable, maybe not with original type fittings, but at least to the point of having the original outlay of floors, walls, and all the windows replaced. That was a fascinating story too by the way.

Thanks everyone for the awesome links! woowooh! If anyone knows of the Holidome in Stevens Point, WI, they just closed it and are tearing it down soon. It hasn't been a Holiday Inn for a while now, and was most recently a Ramada Inn with a Convention Center and a Tilted Kilt.

This home is located in the county I grew up in and sat abandoned for many years. I have been inside of it when I was a teenager and the house was in remarkably good shape other than some mild vandalism. Just in the past few years a group of people became interested in restoring the home and they have been raising money and getting state grants due to it being a historical home. The woman who got everything started was one of my husband's elementary school teachers. I hope it gets restored because it would be quite beautiful.

I dunno why but I love these decay pics they make me wonder what used to happen when there were people in them, kinda how in Titanic they show decay and then bring it to life... that kinda what goes on in my head hehe

For work, I go into a lot of abandoned commercial buildings. I haven't personally had this happen, but it's more common than you'd think that when somebody goes in one they find a corpse. Usually a homeless person or squatter. It happened to a former co-worker one day and she didn't handle it too well.

I am fascinated by abandoned buildings. Always have been. They give me the willies (mostly from the worry of running into squatters), but I still go exploring. Here in the Midwest we have tons of them. I mean you can be out driving the country side, corn and soy fields on both sides and all the sudden there's a huge, brick Victorian structure in the middle of a field. Old abandoned rural schools, hospitals, sanitariums, nursing homes, farmhouses, ect... I live just a few miles from an abandoned military base that was closed in the 50's. Spent quite a bit of time out there with my camera.

Has anyone here heard about Cairo, Ill?

Here is a place up in Johnson City, Tennessee that was abandoned for decades that was recently tore down.

There are a ton of write ups on it on the net and why it was closed in 1962. They claim a staff infection and financial troubles....but who knows. The most famous story is the doctor was a sloppy surgeon, but read that was untrue. Some sites have a pic of it in it's hey day and how it came to be a hospital.

Another creepy place that is no longer abandoned is the current county archives in Murray County, TN. It was an old jail till 1976 when one of the inmates took a cigarette and set a mattress on fire. The mattress let off poisonous gas and the placed instanty became so filled with smoke and poison that countless people died there. A lot of people were so blinded that they struggled to make it out and died in the kitchen. They claim you can hear the pots and pans sound at certain times and when it rains you can smell a strange odd smell.

Mudhouse Mansion seems very cool. I actually like exploring old abandoned buildings. I used to do it a lot with my father, who is a real estate broker. I loved imagining what used to be and what could have been.

Theres an old abandoned building close to where my friend that died 4 years ago lived near an old post office. We always made half assed plans to break in on night and explore but that wont ever happen now. We agreed without any basis it was a haunted orphanage . Just looked it up:

I guess we were right:

This place was originally built in 1926 as a convalescent hospital. The BCAD lists the value at that time as $1.4 million! In 1930, it was a protestant orphans home and since then has been "I am the Alpha and Omega church" and The Miracle Mansion.

Though I fear dying, I actually do not fear encountering anyone dead, so the thought of going alone inside an abandoned building with a very high chance of meeting someone from the afterlife, does not creep me at all.

A little cliche as it may sound to be, I actually fear meeting someone who is not in their proper state of mind, who could actually be living inside one.

The photos are great - but why is these leftovers not removed for good? Creepy and I would not like to get anyway near. I am very much aware that I do not make sense - but I get the creepiest feelings if I get near to such places.

Great pics. Thanks for the link! I suspect that a lot of these photos came from abandoned mental hospitals, of which there are dozens and dozens of around the world. Some of them closed, leaving equipment behind in case the institution would be taken over for some other use, and it didn't happen. There's also a fair number of abandoned regular hospitals around. They were abandoned for any number of reasons... some were built in now what are very bad neighborhoods, so nobody was interested in taking them over. In some of these places, even the land they're built on would not be used if they were demolished.

It appears that all but one are in Europe (the Ellis Island morgue)

Most, if not all appear to be hospital morgues (mental or otherwise)

I dont like that the author used such negative words such as "unsettling"

Morgues, while not happy places are not negative. Those of us who work in them consider it a calling and a passion for people, both in life and death.

Lastly, I have worked in morgues for years and have never, ever had any sort of ghostly or abnormal thing happen. Even while working overnights alone.

Old abandoned buildings fascinate me. The only phobia I have in connection with them is looking up tall elevator shaft...tall enough that I can't see the top. Looking down a shaft doesn't bother me but up...can't do it. Anybody else have a phobia like mine?
