Historically, German lawmakers have often used the World or European Cup season to pass or announce unpopular legislation when they think nobody is paying any attention. This year it was the adoption of a new federal minimum wage and plans to introduce tolls for both Germans and foreigners on all of the nation's roads.
Still, one should be careful with one's wishes. I predict that a German loss will be followed immediately by a government revelation that they have uncovered another US spy.
Ah, I like that! The entire German squad goes into hiding in Argentina where a mad scientist who knows the human genome like the back of his hand develops a plan to replicate their DNA and rear a generation of German soccer supermen. Of course, in the end it is all thwarted by a meddling investigator played by Tom Hanks. But I'm not sure who to cast as the mad scientist. My first pick would have been Philip Seymour Hoffman, but regrettably he is unavailable. I also envision a role for Tony Shaloub in there somewhere. :)
