WISCONSIN - At least one gunman fired into a crowd of more than 100 people partying in the street early Friday, killing four of them, police said.
Two women, ages 23 and 27, and two men, ages 24 and 28, were killed at about 2:30 a.m., police spokeswoman Anne E. Schwartz said.
Two people were injured, including Sylvia Ware, who said she was returning home from celebrating her 35th birthday when she heard gunshots and ducked inside her car.
"Next thing you know, I was shot in the back," she said, crying. She said she then crawled out of her car, and saw two of her friends, a man and a woman, lying lifeless in the street. She then passed out.
Ware, who has just been released from the hospital, said she didn't think she was targeted, but was caught in the crossfire.
A 31-year-old man also was hospitalized with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. to be life-threatening. Police were unsure whether the woman was shot or hit by flying glass.
No suspects are in custody. Police were having difficulty getting cooperation from witnesses, Schwartz said.
"We're not getting a lot of help here," Schwartz said.
Late in the morning, victims' family members placed balloons and teddy bears at the scene of the shooting. They hugged each other as many cried.
Police initially said the shooting happened outside a house party.
