I noticed there is no thread on Marvin. From what I've read he seemed to be a tortured soul.

Talent doesn't always care about your quality of life.
It was a shock to hear the radio announce that his Father had shot Marvin Gaye to death. There were rumors that Marvin was gay,and that was part of the friction between the two men. Can anyone comment on that rumor?
I don't think Marvin was Gay. Him and his father had butted heads all their lives and his father just finally snapped on him - and shot him.
Turns out, his father had a brain tumor - discovered after he was arrested, which MAY have led to him snapping the way he did and shooting him. He never had to serve any time for killing his son. Of course Marvin's mother promptly divorced him!
This was such a sad way to die..I mean can you imagine knowing your dad has shot you...I can't imagine parents killing kids thru abuse or anger and the kids knowing what is happening..parents are supposed to love and protect you no matter what..(and yes I know thats not always the case, I lived it with my mom)
So sad about Marvin Junior. He was abused by his cross dressing father when he was a child. I'm sure Marvin's own drug troubles pushed his Dad over the edge. When Marvin Sr. asked if he loved his son, he paused and said "well, lets say I didn't dislike him.".. wow. that is awful!
Everytime I am in LA, I mean to go to the house in the Crenshaw District where he was killed.
I've heard some fun things about him. He's the only one in history to sing the Nation Athem and have some woman throw her underwear at him for it lol. That must of been some renditon lol.
Heard he was really paranoid on the day he died, got a gun from his brother to kill his father, there was just some crazy shit going on in that house.
Yeah I heard Dad had enough of Marvins drug use, and he snapped. The tumor surely had a lot to do with it, agreed
I always believed that there was mental illness in this family. The father,(even before the brain tumor) seemed to be just as much of a tortured soul as Marvin - sad, sad situation
From what I read there was never a good relationship between them, not even when Marvin Jr. was a kid.His father also never approved of his music.
sexual healing & let's get it on are some of my favs, he was sucha talent yet another tragic end~
Marvin was outstanding in his collaboration with Tammi Terrell on such classics as "Ain't No Mountain High Enough' and "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing". She collapsed in his arms on stage and later died in 1970 of a brain tumor I believe.
He was also married to Berry Gordy's sister at one time.....hmmmmm..... she was 17 years older than Marvin.... draw conclusions/create speculation at will.
My favorites by Marvin are "What's Going On" and "Mercy Mercy Me"
I read some biography on him... they said toward the end he was HEAVY into cocaine. Also, he always felt that he never found real love. Someone showed him a porn film, the usual handcuffs, etc, and he said "I wish I could find someone to love me that much" !!!!!! I guess that pretty much sums up his boring sex life, unloved, cocaine.... pretty much miserable. And how sad is that... with a talent like he had.... it's just a damn shame. Again, again, again and again... no matter the money, the fame, the talentk, the respect..... doesn't mean shit if you ain't got LOVE!!!
Yes, all of the speculation on his relationship with his Dad sums up his life. The statement "there was a lot of sh*t going on in that house!" Said it the best. From what I understand, his father and he would get into it intensely and if his father hadn't killed him it may have ended up the other way around. Unbelieveable. But what a voice!
Marvin was running all kinds of unsavory folks in and out of his parent's house. He was very paranoid, probably from his heavy cocaine use. The gun his father shot him with was given to him by Marvin because of his paranoia. It was the classic "I bought you in the world and I'll take you out!" And in the words of Rick James, "Cocaine's a helluva drug!"
I believe Tammy Terell died of brain cancer. Marvin Gaye's father has been quoted as saying (Something like this): when asked if he loved his son: "I guess I liked him"
ouch...
i once read that he was very into porn stuff, mags and video tapes.
And as Jazzmom posted the gun that he was shot with was a gift he gave his father for his birthday, 4 months before his death *ouch*

On our drive home last night, I heard the opening to a Marvin Gaye song and got jazzed. Then it became clear it was some rap group's bad overdub on top of one of Marvin's tunes. Bah! Station changed!
.
Great Talent gone too soon!
I saw Marvin in concert the summer before he died. What a awsome singer.
A friend who is a police man was on duty when Marvins dad was brought in for his murder. He said that Marvin Sr. didnt have a clue to what was happening.
I have the recording on CD. If i figure out how to download it, I'll send it to you...
But I will look on You Tube to see if I can find the Video. He was singing at the NBA All Star game...
Mad my drawers wet !!!

poor marvin was physically abused by his dad and raped by his dad's brother. his mother did not protect him or his siblings. imagine growing up in an abusive home knowing no one will save you. not even mom. he had issues with women. i guess so. he was on drugs, we should not be surprized. most drug addicts were abused in childhood by parents or other family members. women who are on drugs all tell the same story of being raped as a child by dad or some other man close to them. the way we treat our kids is a reflection of what kind of adult will turn out.
Is there a thread on him.http://www.findadeath.com/forum/newt...=newthread&f=3
even his late stuff was good.
Well some of it.
Bump...
"Whats going on" is one of the greatest, if not the greatest Album of all time and I know its number one Album of all time in the NME most every year with "Pet Sounds" No 2.Those lists often get it wrong but in this case......
I agree with NME
his version of the nation anthem caused alot of drama.i think its the best EVER. and when the ppl started clapping along,it always gives me chills.

Can't post on Frankie without reflecting back on Marvin. Such a talent, such a tragedy.
Let's Get It On is my ringtone when my bf calls. I always grab the closest person to me when we go to a club and that song comes on. Everybody does. Seems that everyone HAS to dance to that one.
It was 25 years today that he died.
RIP Marvin.
We lost a legend.
I remember where I was on Sunday, April 1st,1984 when I heard that Marvin had died. I was at my aunt's house and we had just finished Sunday dinner. She turned on ABC World News Tonight and the headline story was Marvin Gaye's death. Everyone just sat still and looked around like "WTF?" I ran to the radio and turned on WBLS (New York station) and the deejay was all choked up and paying tribute to Marvin. We initially thought it was a cruel April Fool's joke, but sadly it was true. Never thought it would be April 1st, 2009 and I would still be missing Marvin terribly. So tragic to die at the hands of your father, and doubly ironic that it happens the day before your birthday. My favorite song by MG is "After the Dance."
RIP "Silky Soul Singer" Mr.Gaye...still love ya!
Very much missed.
Sexual Healing is an incredible song I never get tired of hearing! Marvin's sexuality oozed out of every word he sang.
RIP Marvin
You contributed to me being here......
