GREAT POST... I love Janis... have done for many years. Her music has joined me in many situtions in my life - good and bad. Latest when I gave birth to my daughter... born to the music from Cheap Thrills... Am still baffled that my boyfriend remembered to get the cd with us to the hospital though

Now that would have been a wonderful sound to have been born to! "Turtle Blues" especially! I've always said that when I die, I want either Janis singing for me at the pearly gates or Judy Garland. Either one would be great. Maybe they could do a duet!

Her voice was the greatest ever ( or at least the greatest woman voice)... Would like to have heard much more of it...Remember watching clips from the Monterey Festival... Janis was performing Ball and Chain, and they show mama Cash in the audience... she very clearly says " Wauw sheĀ“s the greatest"...ThereĀ“s just something about that comment, that gives me goosebombs....

Sorry, but to me Joplin's voice resembled a screeching, guttural cat fed through the end of a foghorn. 'Earthy' she may've been but give me the other 60s icons like Aretha, Dusty Springfield, Dionne Warwick and Laura Nyro any day. Though power to her for cracking a bottle of Southern Comfort over the head of that great bar room bore Jim Morrison. Lizard King? No, more like the Frog Prince.
Theres a cd out though the Hendrix estate dosent recognise it, called " I woke up this Morning and Found Myself Dead " Live from NYC
Jim Morrision while totally blitzed on whatever drugs / booze he took, tries to sing and play the harmonica during this legendary concert along with Jimi Hendrix. Buddy Guy and Johnny Winter jam also. It was recorded live from " The Scene " club in New York. You cant make out what Jim Morrison says into the mic for the most part as Hendrix plays on, but you can hear Jimi yelling at Jim to " Use that mic over there, its live, use that mic ". and " Thats Jim Morrison on ... well whatever hes on ". For the most part Morrison just mumbles into the mic. Only parts I can actually make out is " " F@#* her in the ass " , and " Popular favorite " as the music plays on. The crowd cheers as Jim says these things. Its a great recording. All over ebay in fact.
At any rate, Janis Joplin was in the audiance for this show. After the show Jim Morrison dose something and leans into Janis's limousine open window outside the club and barfs on Janis. Just drenches her with puke. At that point Janis just clocks Jim Morrison over the head with a pint size bottle of Southern Comfort. Then drives off.
Amazing ... 3 members of the Forever-27 club alive and under one roof !
Im sorry I disagree with you, Janis was one of the great singers / songwriters of modern times.

There is a book on Janis by a GF of hers called Down on Janus. I read it years ago. It was not very good. I remember one story where she tells the limo to pull over and she picks up this teenage kid and balls him a few days and dumps him off because he was getting all goo goo eyed. You have to remember this is the same woman who says everyone said she was ugly and didn't like her. She was her own worst enemy.

That book has to be taken with a grain of salt. Her "friend" who wrote that, Peggy Caserta, was a total drug addict, and it read more like a porno rag than a bio about Janis. I just remember it was all mostly about Janis' supposed sex adventures than anything.
Janis never found true love. She thought she did with that idiot Seth towards the end, but he could really give a shit about her. He died in the early 90's in a motorcycle crash, taking his girlfriend with him.
I dont bother with books like that. The only book ive ever read about her was Love, Janis. Nobody knew her better then her own family.

Buried Alive is a great book on Joplin. She was a tragic figure.
FYI, The aforementioned "Janis" Movie is on one of the Movie Channels (HBO, Cinemax, etc.) this month. I watched it this morning, but can't recall which channel it was.
Its called The Way She Was ... IFC channel plays it from time to time. Awsome film !

I've got the VHS of it - and STILL patiently awaiting it to be released on DVD. I just got one called "Kosmic Blues" which is clips from Woodstock, Monterey, Canada, and various other shows. Good stuff. Altho I like the documentary better.
Theres been rumors for decades that a new movie about her life is " in the works " .... Pink, Zoey whatsherface and I think a few other actresses would play janis. Its been " in the works " for so long I doubt it will ever be created.

As I remember there were only a few mentions of sex. If you want to get a picture of a celebrity you need to read various sources. Even a very bad book can have a snippet of truth in it. Just discard the BS. For ex: the longest bio on John Lennon probably contains the least amount of truth.
You have to remember that Janis was adrug addict too. That's the crowd she hung with. You're not going to find a bio on Janice written by a nun.

everybody experamanted with drugs back then. it was just the thing to do. Janis wasnt a addict. she toyed with drugs but her main thing was booze. She loved southern comfort.

There is a girl I work with who had no idea that the Lynryd Skynryd touring today is not the original band. She didn't know who Ronnie Van Zant was......or Steve or Cassie Gaines. So sad.

The guy replied that Pink Floyd is a great singer and couldnt believe im tired of them. I told right there over the guys McDonalds, Your far and away the most dense people ive ever met.
BTW theres only one original member of Lynyrd Skynyrd thats still with the band.

Well, I've told this story over a hundred times but I will tell it again: I was in a record store in Tempe, Az back in about 2003, looking for Janis on vinyl. There were tons of Jimi and the Doors but, none of Janis. I asked the kid, yes KID behind the counter if he had seen any Janis on vinyl (45's mostly) in his travels around the store and he said, "you are the third person to ask me about her this week. Did she just die or something?".
Some things you just NEED to know. Especially if you are working in a reknowned VINYL record store. <sigh>
The other day, I was walking Elvis around the block and a young mother was pushing her kid in a stroller. I told them his name and the woman said, "I've never heard that name before..how cute". Ave maria!!!!

That was the agreement that was made within the band after Van Zant's death - there had to be at least TWO original members for it to continue on.
My sister did drugs and died young. I never saw her much after she found drugs. She had no interest in hanging out with her brother because I wasn't a druggie. I could write a book on my sister but it wouldn't be very accurate because she avoided straight people. All addicts do this. The people who really knew my sister were other drug users. They saw her a lot.

I'm an addict, in recovery. I hung around with straight people. They didn't know I was wasted, mind you but....not ALL addicts do that. We are not bad people, just did some bad things.

My Mom died five years ago and she introduced me to Janis. We would sing Mercedes Benz for hours on end. One of my favorite memories of my Mom. Janis was the bomb but Mom was the bomb times ten!

"His meeting with Janis Joplin was a classic. Around this time Paul Rothchild decided he should get Morrison and Joplin together since he was working with both of them. He described what happened to Blair Jackson in Bam Magazine: 'I thought here's the King and Queen of rock 'n' roll. They should meet. So I got them together at a party in Hidden Hills. They both showed up sober and are getting along great. Jim is fascinated by this remarkable girl and of course Jim was also a fascinating guy and really good-looking. Janis loved to fuck. That was her single greatest pastime. She saw this hunk of meat [Jim] and said, 'I want that.' Jim would get drunk most days and this was no exception and as usual he got rude, obnoxious, and violent. He turned into a cretin, a disgusting drunk. And Janis, who was a charming drunk, was really put off by him. Well, the more Janis rejected him, the more Jim loved it. This was his kind of match. Janis finally said to me, 'Let's get out of here,' and we went to the band station wagon that she always drove. Jim came staggering over. He reached into the car and started to say something and she told him to fuck off. She wasn't interested anymore. Jim wasn't going to take no for an answer, though, and he reached into the car and grabbed Janis by the hair. Well, she picked up a bottle of Southern Comfort she had, reached out of the car, and wailed him on the head with it. He was out cold. The next day, I saw Jim in rehearsal and he said to me, 'What a great woman! She's terrific! Can I have her telephone number?' He was in love. Physical confrontation was his thing. He loved violence. I had to say, 'Jim, Janis doesn't think it would be a good idea for you two to get together again.' And they never did. He was crushed."
You may have some residual denial. I'm sure you wereable to fool straights into thinking you were straight. I guess my sister hung with straight people and hid her problem in order to hold a job..........till the end. Then they fired her and with drug convictions she could not find work except waitressing. When she hung with straights it was because she had to and it wasn't for long.

ive read in several books and articles that she wanted to have a baby by the time she died. i used to think that she didnt really care wether she lived or died, i think she was a sensitive woman who was lost and out of control most of her life, and very confused and at the same time, she was very smart and wanted to focus in her music but she always felt depressed for all the things she lacked.

Residual denial? No, I was/am well aware of what I was doing and have been sober for quite some time. I'm sorry your sister is still paying the price by not being able to get a "decent" job. EVERYONE is addicted to something. Some addictions are just more expensive than others. In one way or another.

There was such a soulfulness in her personality that quite frankly I don't see in many people nowadays. I have always loved ballsy people with lots of warmth and hearts of gold.
These days you see a lot of ballsiness but there also seems to be a lot of the "me, me, me" attitude in people. I have to laugh when I think about the 1980s being called "The Me Decade". Oh, yeah? Well, what about the 2000's?? With cell phones and everything else, people are even more megalomaniacal and self-absorbed nowadays than they ever were back then!
I LOVE Janis and I thought she had the most dynamite eyes. Like everyone else, though, I sure wish that she could have stopped doing what she was doing and gotten the help and nurturing she needed. I would have loved to see (and hear) the great blues and rock/blues (and maybe even country) albums she could have produced over the years.

I grew up with Joplin in the house too, as well as Santana and CCR--my mom loved them and she taught me how to dance, listening to those records.
I can't imagine not having their music in my life!
Had this very conversation with a 20-something the other night. Even that generation seems to know they are missing out. It's a shame. Look at the ITunes top ten....it's all Jonas Bros and Miley Cyrus. Coldplay seems to be about the only real "band" on the list.

I know what you mean. Even as a kid I knew the stars from days gone by. A good actor is a good actor and a good movie is a good movie regardless of the era. I have always loved the old stuff Hollywood did. I feel sorry for anyone who hasnt seen Gilda. It seems too common for the younger crowd to exist in an almost art free world. They wont watch a B&W movie.

It wont. Theres been release dates for the past 2 decades and the dates come and go. Dont hold your breath. Last I knew Pink was supposed to be in it ...
