    Louise Brooks

For my money, Brooksie was the most beautiful actress back in the day (or even now).
Nothing like having a crush on someone who's been dead since 1985!

She wrote a really good book. I think it was Lulu in Hollywood?
    She was also an artist.

Louise pretty much sums up female perfection in my book.
There have been many stunning women around but to me, Louise just had that "sumpthin'-sumpthin'".
She was a perfect mix of pure beauty along with natural cuteness and charming vivaciousness.

Louise was one of the silent films stars in the Thames TV documentary series "Hollywood" hosted by James Mason. I am not sure when this series was filmed. She was older but still pretty. I wish this series was on DVD.

Louise Brooks was ok, but I think Hedy Lamarr gets the edge in looks. And as someone else said elsewhere, Old Hollywood is the best. New Hollywood just doesn't have the same kind of stars as they did back then. The men with the real charisma didn't have 6% body fat and a fake tan. James Stewart; Clark Gable; Spencer Tracy were all average looking guys, but I'd take them anyday over the actors they have today. Myrna Loy, Hedy Lamarr, Louise Brooks, Jean Harlow....there's no one like those women either.

The "Hollywood" series by Thames is one of the best documentaries I've ever seen. It is a must for any fan of silent cinema.

It IS available on VHS, and I'm told that only a copyright issue is holding up its release on DVD.

I read her biography years ago ... called "Louise Brooks" , I believe (how appropriate), but I don't remember the author's name. Anyway, it was an excellent book.

She was intelligent and very well-read...loved to read Proust, if I remember correctly. She also didn't go along with a lot of Hollywood B.S., which is supposedly one of the reasons she went to Germany to make movies with G.W. Pabst.

Don't feel bad: I felt the same way for quite some time after seeing Pandora's Box.

I guess the only thing worse than having a crush on an actress who died back in 1985, is having one on one who died back in 1937 - Or some 15 years before my own mom was even born, LOL.

I love Lulu as well. She was hot, witty and very intelligent. Can't blame her in many ways for turning her back on Hollywood.

A more stunning and striking face than Louise Brooks is hard (if not completely impossible) to find.

My oldest brother would agree with you all. He has collected Louise for years. While he was living in NY, he put flowers on her grave on her birthday and was also on the list to rent the last apartment she lived in.

Louise also reported that she and another woman were about to bang Charlie Chaplin when Chaplin disappeared into the bathroom. He soon emerged naked with his noble pillar of manhood covered in iodine. Brooks laughed so hard Chaplin fumed. I guess Charlie thought if he bathed his plodger in iodine he could fight of the clap.

AMEN. I've always been such a fan of Hedy and I still consider her to be one of the most beautiful that walked the earth. Believe it or not, I've only recently gotten into Jean Harlow and the moment I saw her act I was seriously blown away. No one these days really has that effect on me...at least no actress in the biz today.

    Louise Brooks

She was the original Lulu in Pandora's Box. She was blacklisted by Hollywood for refusing to return and dub a silent film that was made into a talkie. After that she went to Germany and made her two most famous films, Pandora's Box and Diary of a Lost Girl. After that she kind of disappeared. Was rediscovered living in Rochester. In her later years she wrote some very good essays which were collected in the book Lulu in Hollywood. She is terse, bitchy and very honest. She was very beautiful and if you watch her films today she looks very modern.
She died in 1985 basically broke but her legacy lives on and on.
    From Wikipedia:

    Modern influence

Cyd Charisse wears the singular Louise Brooks bob in her nightclub dance scene with Gene Kelly in Singin' in the Rain (1952).
For her Oscar-winning film role in the 1972 movie musical Cabaret, Liza Minnelli was coached by her father, Vincente Minnelli, to fashion her character's appearance on Louise Brooks.[citation needed]
The 1986 film Something Wild, directed by Jonathan Demme, features a main character played by actress Melanie Griffith, who sports Louise Brooks' trademark hairstyle, and goes by the moniker Lulu.
In 1991, the synth-pop group Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark released "Pandora's Box (It's a Long, Long Way)", and the collage-pop band Soul Coughing released "St. Louise Is Listening" in 1998, both inspired by Brooks' life.[25]
In 1992 and 1993, Madonna was inspired by Louise Brooks' look in the videoclips of "I'll Remember" and "Rain", wearing a little black wig. She said later she has been really inspired by Brooks, and by another actress of the same era, Dita Parlo.[citation needed]
In 1995, the Louise Brooks Society was formed to promote a greater awareness of the life and films of this celebrated actress, dancer, and writer. That same year, actress Rose McGowan doned Brooks' signature hairstyle in the film The Doom Generation.[citation needed]
In 1998, a documentary about Brooks, Louise Brooks: Looking For Lulu, was broadcast on the Turner Classic Movies cable network, narrated by Shirley MacLaine.
In 1999, the rock band Marillion included on their 1999 album Marillion.com a song inspired by her called Interior Lulu.[citation needed]
In the late 1990s, BBC Books based their description of the third incarnation of Doctor Who character Romana on Brooks.
In 2001, In the Neil Gaiman book, American Gods, the character Czernobog refers to Brooks as "America's greatest actress".
In 2002, The Simpsons featured the episode Weekend at Burnsies in which Mr. Burns refers to Brooks as "the silent star of LuLu"
In 2007 on reality television series Cycle 9 of America's Next Top Model, contestant and eventual winner Saleisha Stowers received a bob haircut for her makeover

There are some great books on her. Very intelligent but her impulsive nature certainly had a hand in her downfall.

Louise Brooks admitted she became an "escort" after her Hollywood years. Also, she was being "kept" by William Paley, head of CBS. However you can survive, I say.

As someone mentioned an another thread, she always looked so comtemporary in her photos! So many of the older stars from the silents look so dated! Which book is recommended here, Lulu in Hollywood, or the biography, Louise Brooks?

I love her personality. I saw her the other night in a Clara Bow documentary and she made me laugh so many times. What a spitfire. Her honesty and humor was incredible.

I always thought she was beautiful, and so ahead of her time in looks and fashion. I laugh when I look at photos of Mary Pickford and some of the others still trying to look like an innocent teenagers and kewpie dolls when they were 105 !

That certainly didn't hurt. To me it's more than that. When you are young you really don't know what you want.........well, you do but it's pretty basic. After getting divorced and thinking about what I really wanted, it was someone that didn't actually need me. Louise certainly seemed to be that kind of woman.

Found an unretouched photo of Louise, showing her freckles but also some blemishes. Also some rather dark circles under her eyes.
