He was one lucky dude, must have good grip.
Studies show that fear of falling increases grip strength by something like 2% or so.
What's the big deal?
This is just how it was always done back in the early days of hang gliding before they invented safety harnesses.
But just to err on the side of caution, I'd probably avoid doing any skydiving with that same guy who's in charge of the hang gliding experience.
A faulty hypothesis forming:

First thing I would do is go hang gliding again
with the same person.
