20 dead in limo crash in upstate New York

20 dead in a two-vehicle crash? You don't see that everyday.

Apparently it was a wedding party.

AJC reported the limo was speeding down a hill. I wonder if the brakes gave away.

They also said it was a bit of a steep hill. They have been worried a Tractor Trailer rig would loose control because of the speed gained from the hill. So far it does not seem to be any type of terrorist attack. But, damn, 20 people!

Apparently they went through a stop sign, and that intersection has been considered really dangerous for a long time.

This new article has some more specifics. (Not sure why info would be so sketchy on something that happened more than 24 hours ago.)

It seems the limo plowed into an unoccupied vehicle parked at the Apple Barrel Country Store.

18 people in the limo (including the driver) as well as 2 bystanders were killed.

Blowing a Stop Sign explains a lot. That Limo Co. is about to go bankrupt.

No it wasn't a wedding party they were all newlyweds on their way to a friend's birthday. They rented a limo, seems they all go married around the same time, and were just celebrating and going to a birthday party.

I'm still trying to wrap my mind around how everyone died. I could see if there was an explosion but the limo looked OK under the circumstances. I know they don't have seat belts but geez.

Inertia. Whatever the true speed was, and the weight of your body can equal quite a good smash. Then throw in that everybody is flying forward, not only damaging themselves, but who ever they hit. We are not much more than a gooier version of a water balloon.

It seems to me that bouncing off an SUV at a possible 60 mph downhill velocity would create quit a bit of carnage.

Was just watching the news with the initial investigation reports and apparently the vehicle failed an inspection, and the driver did not have CDL. An investigator said they were looking into "how the engine block moved behind the driver's seat". Sounds pretty horrific.

One thing I would never ever do is be a commercial driver of any kind. Can you imagine taking other folks' lives into your hands?

If they made a movie of this incident, it should be named, "The Perfect Shit Storm." Until this story came about, I had no idea how unregulated the Limo Industry is. The Vehicle itself, was a Frankenstein nightmare from a Stephen King story. How's that for mixing metaphors?

Just read that the owner of the limo company was an FBI informant https://nypost.com/2018/10/08/owner-...fbi-informant/

I'm still trying to figure out how the crash was SO lethal though. I understand that the vehicle was chopped, it was going downhill really fast, no seatbelts, got it. Photos of the exterior of the thing make it look pretty much intact. When it hit the tree, were the passengers basically propelled within the vehicle? Not trying to be heartless, it's insane that everybody but one person passed instantly. Poor people.

I just saw pictures of some of the young people killed and I am now officially sad. We all know that thousands of people die every day of every conceivable cause, but this one touches me. They are all so young.
