    Prince

Wow. Didn't see that coming. Prince is dead at the age of 57. His plane made an emergency landing last weekend and he spent a short amount of time in the hospital. Afterwards, he appeared at an outdoor concert but didn't perform, telling the crowd to "save your prayers, I'm fine". R.I.P. Prince

For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them.

What's so good about goodbye, when the best was yet to come?

OMG!! I was just in the car and heard this on the radio. I was probably a few miles down the road from Paisley Park, I thought about driving over there to see if anything was still going on but just wanted to get home. I can't believe this!!

Being from Minneapolis, Prince is a HUUUUUUUGE hometown hero. I remember when I was growing up hearing stories of people who saw him around town, one saw him using a pay phone.

I was once driving down Park Avenue in Minneapolis and saw this huge crowd of people and some media outlets and other stuff and saw a massive crowd at the church on the corner. I was lucky enough to see just as the bride and groom were coming out and it was Price and Mayte! That was pretty cool! I was so sad when they had their baby that died, and he had a lot of controversy. There aren't a lot of details but apparently it was deformed in some way and they decided to not maintain life and he took a lot of flack for that.

Anyway 57 is too young. Interesting coincidence that he was just talked about (well not just, but it just resurfaced) by David Bowie, when he questioned MTV about not playing black artists, and the VJ said the Midwest would be too scared of Prince.

    RIP.

I'm going to listen to 7 and Erotic City right now.

I keep hoping it's a mistake, first they just reported a confirmed fatality at PP, but it's not looking good. Heard the last Instagram picture he posted was a blank white image. Kinda weird.

ETA one more thing. I remember when 1999 came out on the radio and it seemed so so far away. I worked at the casino on NYE 1999 and it was so fun to actually hear that song at exactly that time, and kinda sad that now the song was going to be dated.

Holy crap. I wonder if it was aids like people are speculating. This is so random since it was reported he was fine after that hospital trip. RIP Prince.

Lots of people are out at Paisley Park. Purple flowers going up as we speak.

I also used to frequent First Avenue night club weekly in my younger years, which was owned by Prince (no longer is), part of Purple Rain was filmed in there, it was so cool to see where I hang out in a movie, even though by the time I was there it was a little different.

The AIDS thing is interesting, a LOT of people guessed Prince on that blind gossip website. Heard some other people who then speculated about Vanity, who of course just died a well.

How cool that you saw them after their wedding! I watched Mayte on VH1's Hollywood Exes a few years ago. She still had her wedding dress, the wedding china, etc., and the other girls were telling her it was time to let it go. I saw an article last month that those items were to be auctioned on March 17, 2016 (wedding dress included). Some of the items are still available. I would post a link here but I don't know if it would be against TOS. You can Google "Prince auction" and find it easily. I bet that stuff will go quickly now that he's gone. Also, their baby had Pfeiffer Syndrome. Poor little fella.

I saw his name on Musicians and I'm like Yeah, right. I was hoping it was a hoax. I wish. I was never a fan in the true since of the word, couldn't hear him, but I did like to see him perform, and I know big when I see it. I'm floored. RIP.

First Ave is having an all Prince dance party all night tonight, starting at 11pm. It's free, but the show before it is sold out and I don't know how many of those people will leave to let room for more people to come in.

Here are some pictures from around the Twin Cities for Prince. I'm waiting for tonight, we have a building that has LED lighting at the top of it that changes all night, but they can set it for special events (rainbow for pride, red white blue for July 4, etc..) so I'm sure they'll have a pretty purple theme tonight.

This is in one of our skyways. It's actually not a memorial, just a permanent part of downtown, just showing you we love our Prince here.

Aww, for some reason this ^^^ is what put tears in my eyes. Have been listening to his music this afternoon. Usually I'm like, "it's too soon" but this seems sort of appropriate.

I was a mortgage loan underwriter in a former life. I did a QC audit of a file - it was the purchase of the house by Prince. This had to be back in the late 1980s – very early 1990s. I am not sure if the house in question was the basis for Paisley Park, or if it was one of his early homes that may have been sold later on. It was a very traditional looking colonial house – the only "eccentric" feature that I recall was a fully operational beauty parlor (2 or 3 chairs/dryers if I recall) in the basement. I don't know if it was already there, or if it was installed after he purchased the home.

The only thing in the file with his signature on it was the power of attorney that he had signed - Prince Rogers Nelson - in a very tiny handwriting that reminded me of say a sixth or seventh grade boy trying to write very neatly :-)

Having underwritten amortgage loan for Neil Young around the same time, it was interesting to note that while most of the Neil Young's assets were in the form of the rights to his songs, at this time most of Prince's assets were in his equipment – trucks, scaffolding, stages, costumes, etc. As this was not at the peak of his career, I am certain that asset allocation change dramatically in the years to come.

It does feel unreal. Very strange. Our local stations all preempted regular programming this morning, one station stayed on all day with Prince stuff, at least until the evening national news came on. It's been strange to watch this all day, but he's really the only person we've got for whom I could see his happening.

I don't think this is "worse" than David Bowie for me, because his music meant more to me, but Prince's music has just been a fact of life for my whole life. Plus the fact that he's probably the most famous person, internationally, to ever come out of Minnesota, it's just been a really strange day.

    That is cool!

They were talking to Jimmy Jam on the TV, who is a local producer most famous for his work with Janet Jackson (with his partner Terry Lewis), and he went to middle/high school with Prince. He said when they were 14 they took keyboard classes together and that P was amazing on the piano. Then he heard him play the guitar and was blown away. He then went out into the hall, heard the drums and thought "oh, Mr. Harrison [their teacher] must be playing the drums", went back in the music room and it was Prince. He was really a musical genius who mastered many instruments.

The great Stan Freberg's son Donavan posted this hilarious anecdote about making a commercial about a certain brand of spaghetti.

"My father did a spot for Prince spaghetti in the 80's. It parodied Prince, the singer, in a loving way. His lawyers sent a cease and desist letter to the Spaghetti company and to my dad telling him to stop using the artists name. My dad did the Freberg thing, he called Prince. My mother (of course) somehow got his home telephone number. A few days later, I picked up the office line (some kids were born in a trunk, I was born in an ad agency) and a voice on the other line said, "I'm calling for Stan Freberg, this is Prince". Speechless, I managed to get out the words, "Hold the line, sir", and handed the phone to my dad.

"Mr. Prince?", boomed my dad....long story short, 5 minutes later my dad had Prince laughing, my dad was laughing, and Prince had never even seen the spot. My dad FedExe'd him the commercial, along with a specially made box of spaghetti my dad got Prince (spaghetti) to make, just for Prince, called "Purple Grain" and Prince gave the go-ahead. The spot aired, with his blessing. He said he thought it was "clever". I loaned my dad some Prince records, and he said, "That kid can really play!".

My mother sent a pair of velvet gloves to Prince, as a gift, after the spot won Prince spaghetti top shelf at grocery stores from here to Detroit.

    RIP, beloved. "

    The commercial in question:

One theory - he had pneumonia and wasn't taking his medications. As he got sicker in the last few days he was taking more than he should have - hence the visits to the pharmacy. Should be an interesting autopsy/cause of death.
