I am watching a show that I have never seen before called, "How's You Get So Rich", hosted by Joan Rivers while reading the below article and I have to say it felt odd to look up and see her. She was so funny. (I just had to go back and delete the word IS to WAS.) http://www.nytimes.com/2014/09/08/ar...773522000&_r=0

Looks like somber faces all around. Shock and grief. In a way it makes sense Joan went out this way, in "a blaze of glory," with all the shows she was doing, the new book. She probably would not have been one to get sick and wither away until the reaper finally showed up. Every time ger voice got froggy the thought crossed my mind of her going for surgical treatment and not making it. There was probably no way she was going to rest her voice either. Afterall... "Can we talk" , lol. God love Joan Rivers. I cant watch any reruns yet and still havent brought myself to download the new book. UGH. Its almost like losing a family member. I dont even want to watch any red carpets, thats how bad it is. I need chocolate!

I only watched Fashion Police because of Joan, it's not going to fly without her. She was the show.

I only knew her as some lady who insulted people based on their looks on the red carpet.

Wasn't she cremated? If so, that would answer the casket questions.

I thought Joan was going to come out of it. I was surprised to hear she had died. RIP.

I wasn't a huge fan but she did say some funny stuff. Sometimes I thought she was a little out of line but it was usually when she said something about someone I liked and I had a hard time being objective about.

This is one of those deaths that confuse me though. I think of ANS as more of an actress than I do Joan, and she is stuck down in the Other Deaths section, as are other comedians. Robin Williams was a major actor of course, in addition to being a comedian... I just don't always understand the criteria to be in this section or the other. I guess I Shouldn't worry about it though, not my job.

a joke Howard Stern delivered at her eulogy

Joan’s pussy was so dry it was like a sponge - so that when she got in the bathtub – whooooosh – all the water would get absorbed in there! Joan said that if Whitney Houston had as dry a pussy as Joan’s, she would still be alive today.'"

Joan made quite a few movies--Rabbit Test is one--and guested on a number of TV episodes, which qualify her for this section.

I am not Jewish but I have had good friends who are. Per Jewish tradition, the burial usually takes place within 24 hours of death and since I have seen a Jewish cemetery every head stone is pointed in one direction to the East, facing Israel.

I had a love/hate thing for Joan. She said some very funny stuff; she also said things I thought were mean and vulgar. However, I did happen to (accidently) catch the episode of her on Celebrity Wife Swap this afternoon and thought it showed an interesting side to her. She treated Bristol Palin well and also did stuff with her grandson that she normally didn't do, then owned up to enjoying it. She certainly loved her work and was a busy woman right up till the end.

New development, it is really looking like the doctors effed up and killed her. The NY Daily News posted this tonight (longish article, I'm posting the pertinent section):

The routine surgical procedure Joan Rivers was supposed to undergo turned deadly when a doctor who arrived at the clinic with the legendary comic’s entourage performed an unplanned biopsy on her vocal cords, a medical source who was briefed on the case told The News.

Such a procedure is not supposed to be performed outside of a hospital, according to medical experts.

The Aug. 28 biopsy at Yorkville Endoscopy, an E. 93rd St. clinic that usually only deals with digestive issues, caused Rivers' vocal chords to seize — a condition doctors call a laryngospasm — cutting off her air supply, the source said.

“A biopsy like that should only be done in a hospital setting,” the source said.
“If she had been in a hospital when it happened, she might have been okay,” the source said.

Rivers’ doctor — who identified himself as an ear, nose and throat specialist — asked if he could use their instruments when the clinic’s doctor noticed "something" on Rivers’ vocal chords, according to the source.

“He asked and they let him,” the source said. “A huge no-no.”

The source added that the “Fashion Police” star had only signed off on an endoscopy — not the far more dangerous biopsy of her vocal chords.

A representative for Rivers declined to comment. A spokeswoman for Yorkville Endoscopy said she couldn’t comment because of patient confidentiality laws.

Although I think they screwed up royally, procedures like hers are done everyday in an "ambulatory surgical center", and that's what they were. Some ASCs do everything from dental to plastic surgery.

The biopsy? The endoscopy is performed in clinics often. The biopsy, it seems, is the one that is supposed to be performed in a hospital.

Pallbearers had her casket on their shoulders and she was put into the hearse. Melissa stepped up and was said to kiss the coffin. Also, supposedly Cooper did too, but it wasn't on the vid I watched--whoever had the camera going was behind the open left-opening rear door. Probably better vids out now.

Melissa is saying goodbye before the trip to the crematorium, a day or so before....no casket at actual funeral.

Really? Is that in monopoly money or real money? Do they have rental caskets? I always thought they used a cardboard box since it was going to be burned.

I can absolutely believe she's worth that much. She's been working for years, successfully. She was working her ass off right up until the end, wrote 12 books, had a successful jewelry line, and bought her NYC apartment years and years ago and it must have multiplied exponentially in value. This woman was no dope.

why is it so alarming that an 81 year old had a heart attack during a medical procedure? people are resigning and investigations are going on... she knew the risks.

But it wasn't just a sudden heart attack...it was brought on by a medical procedure done incorrectly.

It is suspected that a second procedure that Joan did not sign for was performed by an an unauthorized doctor, and that this second procedure, which should have been done in a hospital, caused her throat to seize up and cut off her air supply, which triggered her heart attack in addition to respiratory arrest.

This wasn't a heart attack that "just happened to an old person."

The doctor that performed the fatal procedure had also been sued for malpractice over a similar procedure.

ok, I guess when it's no longer suspected and considered fact I'll believe it.

Given that Joan did not have a history of heart attacks, I think it is obvious that the procedure killed her.
