America was one of thoes folky acts that made lots of stuff but only a few songs really stood out. Horse with no name , being the only song I really knew, its a staple on classic rock radio. Sorry to see another from the era go away. The era when rock n roll used to be great.

So sorry to hear of his passing. He had a distinctive, somewhat mournful singing voice. The video at your link, of him singing "Lonely People" is a good one.

America had some great songs that still hold up today. Not the best quality, but one of my favorites of theirs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jKwC...eature=related

I enjoyed America at a concert at James Madison University in the Fall of 74. Rest in peace, Dan Peek....you've left us many good memories.

Oh no! This is sad. I liked America's music. Their sound was quintessential 70's Soft Rock.

Their song "You Can Do Magic" is currently being used by Sonic Burgers in one of their commercials.

I caught that one last night, and rolled my eyes. What a waste of a decent song!

But at least the guys are making some money from it...

Ventura Highway is my fave. I even like the Janet Jackson song that samples it.

My copy of their self-titled album had deep grooves worn into it by the time I graduated high school.

Thanks for the inspiration Mr. Peek, RIP.

... there goes another piece. It's really getting sad because they're all dying much too young.

Love "I Need You" and "Ventura Highway". Saw a few of the remaining band members in a bar in the early 90's and they put on a great show.

    May he RIP.

I had heard when they first started out, they were trying to emulate Crosby Stills, and Nash.

That's a big task, CSN had awesome harmonies. To their credit, they harmonized wonderfully.

    Dan's Transformation

Dan was much more than an America singer, you know. Eventually after sampling everything the rock life had given him, he got down on the floor and prayed to God about his life and became a Christian. "All Things Are Possible" was a FANTASTIC song which came out of his new life with a renewed mind! He and his wife gave up everything and moved to the Carribean to work as a carpenter for 15 years or so. Go to YouTube and you will see several interviews he made regarding all this.

Back in the late 70's when my life was in the dumpster, I used to sleep with the radio on. No matter how deep of sleep I was in, Dan's "All Things Are Possible" would wake me up! Eventually I did accept Jesus Christ of Nazareth as my Lord and Savior thanks to Dan's song and other factors!

Wow, I'm just finding this out! Sister Golden Hair has to be the most popular of their songs (well, IMO anyways) but they had a lot of memorable songs!
