Original Night Stalker, East Area Rapist

I did a search and didn't find anything. If I am wrong, I apoligize ahead of time.

"On June 18, 1976, the East Area Rapist's first attack occurred at 4:00am on Paseo Drive in Rancho Cordova, CA. Within 6 months, 7 additional attacks were committed by the same man. As rumors of the rapes spread through the affected communities, the Sacramento Sheriff's Department asked the news media not to report on the rapes and give them time to catch the rapist. 28 years later, the EAR and now the ONS remains unidentified."

Still unsolved after all these years, even with DNA evidence.

Cool story, I didn't know about it until recently. Spooky.

i remember this as i lived up in the sacramento area when this dude was around. a real sob. he enjoyed calling up victims AFTER the crime and further terrorizing 'em. he thrived on terror. a reason we don't know him as well as others as he moved to southern cali and then to parts unknown. this was before cops were really linking crimes together.

here is his voice when he called back a victim to re terrorize her.

here is a podcast with the police detective/author who recently wrote a book on the case.

    from wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Original_Night_Stalker
"The Sacramento East Area Rapist is believed to have began as a burglar, only later committing rapes. His modus operandi was to stalk middle classneighborhoods at night for women who lived in single story homes. He ran away when spotted prowling, on one occasion a youth who closely pursued him was shot and seriously wounded. Most victims had seen or heard a prowler on their property before the attacks, many had suffered break-ins. Police believed there was a pattern of the offender using reconnaissance on the houses of victims before the day of the crime. The criminal initially sought out women by themselves, but later began to target couples. Typically he entered a house at night, woke the occupants and threatened them with handgun. All victims were bound with ligatures the criminal brought to the crime scene, the female was made to tie her male companion with bootlaces before being tied herself. The perpatrator was believed to use a cycle for the attacks. A masked cycle rider chased by a policeman in the early hours of the morning is believed to have been the rapist. The suspect left the bike and made off when spotted, during the subsequent footchase across back yards he vaulted a series of fences and shook off the pursuit."

in the podcast, at around the 4:30 mark a very chilling aspect of this rapist. going back a second time to the house next door.

he went from burglar, to rapist, to killer.

    interesting fact from wiki
"The Original Night Stalker/East Area Rapist case was the motivating factor in the passage of legislation leading to the establishment of California'sDNA database, which authorizes the collection of the DNA of all the accused and convicted felons in California. "

a very in depth website dedicated to the east area rapist. one of the worst that you have never heard of. and someone who must be caught ala BTK.

    http://www.ear-ons.com/investigate.html

"He killed more people than the Zodiac, but he has only a fraction of the Zodiac's notoriety. His under-the-radar quality --- he moved through a series of mid-sized California towns over the span of ten years --- makes him more terrifying to me. He didn't need you to publish his letters. He was too busy jiggling locks and pressing against window screens, testing for vulnerability.

One of his most frightening qualities was his pre-planning. He would break into homes and unlock windows, hide pre-cut ligatures, take out the bullets in victims' guns. Then he would leave. Hours, days or weeks later, during middle-of-the-night attacks, his victims would realize the masked stranger pressing a cold knife to their neck had already been in their house secretly to set up."

E! put on a show on this bad dude. over 50 rapes plus 12 kills...he relished in torturing his victims.
he would go into the house a few times before the actual attack. look for weapons and unload 'em, unlock a window, etc. he would stay in the house for hours AFTER the attack. sometimes he would call the victim afterwards just to let him know he could come back. a real monster.
just a monster. watch the show, and you'll be shocked.

It's been at 34 years since this "man" started his crimes. Assuming he was in his mid thirties, he'd be in his early to mid 70's now. There's a very good chance he's dead or locked up on totally unrelated charges somewhere else.
Most serial killers only stop killing when they're locked up or dead. The BTK is not the norm for them.

I'd like to see this case solved. I've got family that live in Sacramento. Thankfully they were never a victim of this "man."

I watched a "Cold Case File" about him one night. It was probably the only one I've watched that was unsolved, and so terrifying!! Most likely, in his 70's, his testosterone has dropped considerably and he no longer has the urges to commit these crimes. It really burns me to think that if he's alive, he could likely be somebody's spouse, somebody's father, somebody's grandfather, and enjoying a nice retirement somewhere with no consequences. At least, not in this life.

I do hope they are able to figure out who he is. I've never heard of him before! I can't believe there wasn't more media attention to this creeper!

DeAngelo faces capital murder charges in connection with the killings of Katie and Brian Maggiore in 1978. He is being held without bail in Sacramento. He will be arraigned Friday afternoon.
He also is accused by Ventura County authorities in connection with the 1980 rape and slaying of Charlene Smith and the killing of Lyman Smith, according to a criminal complaint.
"All too often we forget to talk about the victims and today we at least brought the first step towards closure for those victims of these horrendous crimes," Jones said.
The suspect is a former Auburn, California, police officer who was fired in 1979 for shoplifting a can of dog repellent and a hammer from a drugstore, according to Jones. He worked as a police officer in Exeter and Auburn between 1973 and 1979.

Is it just me or does DeAngelo favor the late Lawrence Tierney?

This is one sick and sadistic SOB! I'm glad he's been found, no doubt in my mind they have the right guy. I love how they eventually tracked this POS down, he very nearly got away with it. I seriously thought he had been incarcerated years ago or was dead, it is so odd that he all of a sudden just quit. There's been several theories on that, but the one I tend to believe is he got scared off once he learned about the development of DNA. I hope he rots, he'll never receive the DP because California is too broke to execute anyone, but at least he's locked up. It still angers me that he got away with it for so long.
By my troth, I care not; a man can die but once; we owe God a death.... He that dies this year is quit for the next.
